A potential energy function describes the potential energy as a function of position. The important ramification of that function is that we can derive force as a function of position by applying our understanding of work. Really if we take the derivative of potential with respect to position, we get force.

One important thing to note, is that potential decreases when motion is in the direction of the force, which means the slope of potential has the opposite sign of force.

Potential energy functions come up in calculus based physics including AP Physics C Mechanics.
