Math is a great equalizer...in math it is clear the truth of an assertion depends not at all on the person making it.

I like that you made a distinction between the abstract artistic and the practical engineering tilt to it. I think the primary reason people either engage with or dislike mathematics is a temperamental one. I'm the practical engineering type and do (some) mathematics for that purpose, but wouldn't choose to for fun. I hated it at school. When I see a practical use for it I'm interested. I use trig all the time at work (CNC machining).

It's a great question but I don't know how to explain why I love mathematics in some easy soundbite or pull quote, I certainly don't know why anyone else loves it.

What I do know is that it offers many happy hours working through problems and creative play. I know that it alone offers the keys to unravelling physical law, it offers a pathway to less uncertainty about the empirical world, it empowers the imagination with new, sophisticated thinking tools. I get a kick out of that. And sometimes when you've been working on a problem for a long, long time and you suddenly see a solution in your mind's eye, that is a huge rush.

Some quotes may be of interest.

"Mathematics is the music of reason." - James Joseph Sylvester.

"It is impossible to be a mathematician without being a poet in soul." - Sofia Kovalevskaya
