Freaky Creepy Face Illusion

This is a recently-discovered illusion is known as the "Flashed Face Distortion Effect". [1] The authors of the study discovered the illusion by mistake whilst preparing images for an identification experiment.

What if you did this with dogs? Or objects? Does it have to be faces? I know we evolved to recognize human faces so that might be why, and if so what with someone with facial blindness, how would they see it.
