So I decided to test this myself Joe as its an interesting idea. I found that flange really needs more send signal than you normally would have set for your reverb send. So I created a separate bus for the flanger plugin with its own send from the Vocal channel. Then I sent this Bus direct to the Reverb Fx Channel only no other output to the Master fader. This allowed me to adjust the amount of vocal send independently to the reverb and the flanger giving me a much fuller effect that had a lot more control. As always great video that got me to mess with something I probably wouldn't have.

I like it, the flanger can help make disappear that tiny bit of extra reverb that we always want to remove from the full mix 👍

Thanks for publishing your experiment. Some might call it a failure, but I say you delivered valuable information and insight/analysis. Love your presentations.

Years ago when I did live sound and had a Yamaha Rev 7. I’d use preset #10 Reverb/Flange on Tom’s. The flange is in the reverb tail, sounds great.

Bob Clearmountain is the king of modulation effects.

I think what is making the effect so subtle was the mix being 100%, with an effect like flanger, 100% tends to be just the just the delayed version of the signal that moves, but you need to mix it with the dry signal to get more of the actual sound of the flanger. 50% being the most interaction between the 2.

Very subtle. Cool idea. To my ears, when it gets the the place where you can hear it, it sounds like the 80's Prince/Minneapolis funk sound. So maybe just a genre idea?

Thank you for trying that. I think it's great that you not only show us what works and also why what doesn't work doesn't work, or when it might work. Yes, this video was worth doing even if you weren't happy with the results. As you say, we have to learn what serves the song.

Using modulation is definitely something for specific situations. This type of application could be useful in some situations to add a little magic that you can’t really pick out, but affects the end result in a subtle way.

Ive learnt i dont have to hear everything as long as i can feel it. Most times its the feeling. And i feel it😊

I think this would work with a different style reverb. You're using a plate or hall style, but with a short room I can hear it adding depth. I would also consider using it on something with a constant presence in the mix, for example, a constant strumming acoustic. Use it in verse 2 or 3 to add some subtle lift and ear candy as a song progresses.

HI Joe... As always .... awesome info . Thankyou also for the Audio Production Course... I hope you and your family had a fantastic Christmas and have a great new year. God Bless

Well, with flangers in general, I have found that modifying the delay time dramatically affects the frequencies cancelled by the comb filter effect. Flangers modulating between 1 and 2 ms will sound very different than flangers modulating between 2 ms and 4 ms. Additionally a post verb compressor can clean up the vocal while still allowing a lush tail which could be enhanced with the flanger in front. I have used ping pong delay pre reverb to widen a mono source.

I agree that possibly a more aggressive sounding flanger would likely yield more noticeable results. Or it could also require a bit of tweaking to the reverb settings as well. Like backing off the pre-delay, as the flanger is basically and oscilating, de-tuned delay, that feeds back into itself. This could be causing a sl8ght phase cancelation.

I think the idea is more "flanger + reverb = slightly more interesting (or at least, different) reverb" more than "= a reverb with an audible flanger effect". As from what I can hear, the flanger almost seemed to reduce the reverb time. For instance, at 2:30 [the tail of "remember"] compared to 2:45.

I always like the idea of using/combining fairly basic effects in interesting ways.

I was just playing with a flanger on vocals last week. It didn't fit the song but did give me some great ideas for later. Try a phaser as well.

One thing I have tried recently is putting an 1176 style compressor after my room reverb and smashing it. It adds the same vibe that we would have if we were listening to the song live. Using very fast compression settings with a regular compressor may yield the same result I haven't tried another compressor so I don't know. But the idea came from working on an album and wanting the songs to have a live feel and the reverb were too sterile and adding saturation kind of helped but it was sounding very gritty because most of the songs were dense (maybe I overdid the saturation) but adding the 1176 after the reverb got me the result I wanted. Just leaving this here in case someone wants to try this.

The flange on specific syllabus....
To what degree is it usuable to deliver the emotional content of the song. It can be one of those things that once you see you cannot unsee.... maybe in a fade out ending

I kinda like this idea. I'll give it a go, though with a different flanger. BTW: Liking the hairy Joe.

Maybe behind the reverb on the high end, might be cool, might pull out some high end you don't want and bring it back in when you do, this would take some very specific timing of the flanger.
Flangers do have a cool FX on high end frequencies, but I would probably try it on the "side" info not the "mid".

Isn't that what the Holy Grail pedal does? Flanger/reverb?
