P-51 Mustang vs. Spitfire ~ which is the better fighter ?

North American P-51D Mustang vs. Supermarine Spitfire. Comparing both Warbirds on a technical Point of View.

I've never liked comparison's like this, especially when it comes to the pinnacle offerings of what Great Britain and the United States had to to defeat the Axis Powers. I won't pass judgement on which one is the better fighter, because they each have their strengths and weaknesses, and their both close on paper....It would come down to who the pilot is. Both of these aircraft were extremely successful in the roles they were assigned to, and that's all that matters. They got the job done and won the war because of it. So both were "better" for the roles they were entrusted with, and proved it with deadly results....I love them both!!

I love both planes. In my book, they are equally superior. To get down to which is the better plane? You'd have to seriously check all features, power, available flight distance on full tank, glide distance with engine shut down, then, main question, which has best manuver abilities. The Spitfire has more square feet on main wing, which would allow it a longer glide distance with engine shut off, but, we have to take in weight factor's also. So slot of checking needs to be done. The Mustang has slightly different main wing, and less square feet on it, making it slip when turning tight. Glide distance would be shorter than the Spitfire. I wouldn't want to be in a DOG fight between the two planes. Both could be the winner with the right Fighter Pilot. Know what I mean?

In my opinion: BOTH of them are the better fighter, because they have the same powerful MERLIN heart - best allied avionic in this age - very strong weapons, and by the way... with a skillful pilot on board, they are deadly effective!

Better? If it was a Mk.IX Spitfire I'd go Mustang, for the additional speed. The power to engage and disengage a fight at your own accord. With a Griffin-powered Spitfire though, I'm unsure. I think I'd sooner pick a Griffin-powered Spitfire over a Mustang

To start to compare these you'd have to first define the roles they were designed to fulfill. The Spitfire was designed to be a quick response inceptor and air superiority fighter much like the Bf 109. The P-51D in its designed was primarily designed to be high altitude long range fighter escort. Two very different roles, you simply cannot say one is better than thee other. Both were great fighters no doubt. In a dogfight the Spitfire would certainly have the advantage having better energy retention, higher climb rate, and being more maneuverable. While being at a high altitude the Spitfire would give up a good fight, however the P51D would then have the better energy performance and top speed and of Corse the ability to stay in the fight longer.

Spitfire. The Spit can keep its wings on through a T-Storm. Better built, more rugged, better firepower {later versions} handle grass fields easier, easier maintenance, better flight characteristics. Beside a P-47, the best looking bird in the sky.

The Spitfire was designed as a fighter. The Mustang was designed as an escort fighter. The Spitfire would be more manoeuvrable but didn’t have the range of the Mustang to escort USAF bombers over Germany.

Mustang represents vastly more modern engineering me 109 and spitfire are contemporaries in all their upgrades .mustang should be measured against hawker tempest or typhoon it's contemporaries also last lag 9 also didn't Japan make some models to counter b29 that when tested at wars end test pilot said he, s glad wars over this would have been terrible adversary.
