Why India Rejected The Global Hunger Index Ranking | Mint Explains

With a score of 28.7 India is ranked 111th on a list of 125 countries in the Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2023. India's ranking in the index is worse than neighbouring countries like Pakistan, and Srilanka which have been dealing with serious economic troubles lately.

In response, India's Ministry of Women and Child Development has said that the rankings are "flawed" and did not depict India's true position. Abhishek Singh, Deputy Editor Mint explains.

As far as childhood stunting (low height for age) goes, India, again, comes in the category of ‘very high’ risk countries. More than 35% children have been marked stunted in India, although several other African countries and some east-Asian countries perform worse than India on this parameter

India rejected its No.111th position on the World Hunger Index but accepted its No.40th position on the World Innovation Index?

The prevalence of anaemia among women aged 15-24 has been reported as a major problem for the country. More than 50% of women and adolescents are anaemic in the country – one of the highest across the world.

With about 16.6% of the overall population undernourished, India’s levels of undernourishment have been marked as of ‘medium’ risk. And, in under-5 mortality, India has been categorised as a country with ‘low risk’, with about 3.1% of children dying before the age of five

According to the report, India has the highest child ‘wasting’ (low weight for height) rate across the world, at 18.7%, reflecting acute undernutrition. In fact, ‘wasting’ is considered to be the worst form and indicator of all forms of child under-nutrition.

If a country has more than 15% of the children ‘wasted’, it has been marked as ‘very high’ level of concern in the report. India is the only country, thus, where the wasting has been put in the category of ‘very high’.

The counterarguments lack some most basic scientific common sense. For example, a difference of only 4 positions out of over 100 countries from 2022 to 2023 is completely normal due to random noise, it does not mean the results are flawed.

When
International report : India is growing fast
Indian governments :😊
International report : India is very bad hunger index ranking.
Indian governments: we reject the report.
Such a hypocrisy

Four factors were taken into account for calculating the GHI scores: undernourishment (refers to the entire population – both children and adults); child stunting (share of children who have low height for their age); child under-5 mortality; and child wasting (children who have low weight for their height). All these indicators are components of the universally agreed UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

We all know India fights poverty as hard as it can, but that it's a tough problem. Maybe this result is an indication that the fight isn't over yet. May India have all the best circumstances and support from everywhere to finally pull each and every person out of misery!

We reject everything critical of us. And we go tom tom even if some irrelevant association says something positive. Come on. Face the reality. Smell the coffee...

If we reject the reality, how will we ever take corrective action

India's position might not be that worse, but it is a fact that india has Hunger issues.

With over 5 lakhs beggers
85% population ear under 7$ a day
7% population live below poverty line ($1.3)

Just 7% of indian population is around 9-10 crore, ranking top 20 in the world.

And india rejwcting GHI is just a laughable approach from the government. Instead of accepting the fact and working on it, they just want to ignore the fact.

In the 2023 Global Hunger Index, India ranks 111th out of the 125 countries with sufficient data to calculate 2023 GHI scores. With a score of 28.7 in the 2023 Global Hunger Index, India has a level of hunger that is serious

80 crore beneficiaries for government free food program itself proves the ranking is correct, unfortunately India has an extremely rich government with lot of poor people.

do you really think india's food crisis is that bad? we are at the second position in rice production. the govt is literally providing rations for free since the covid days.. yes i agree rice is nowhere close to being sufficient for proper nutrition since our body doesn't crave for carbs only. but today there is no way that someone can die out of hunger in India. the ranking is bullshit
