Hustler Raptor 42' Zero Turn Kawasaki 21.5hp Oil Change

Its time to change the oil in my Hustler Raptor 42" Zero Turn Mower with Kawasaki 21.5hp motor. This machine needs 2 quarts of SAE 10w-40 oil and a Kawasaki 49065-7007 filter. It is recommended that you change the oil at 50 hours. Because I do not run mine that much in a season I change once a year before the cutting season. This oil change is straight forward. First unscrew the dipstick. Use a 1/2" tube to connect to the drain plug. Use a size 10 socket to loosen the oil plug. Let the oil drain into a pan. Unscrew the filter and replace with new one. Fill the oil through the fill plug with a funnel. Use the dipstick by setting it on the threads but not tightening it down. Make sure that the oil is at the fill line.

Those Kawasaki engines are pretty nice. Space is tight around that filter, but one tip is to cut off the bottom of a 2L soda bottle and put the bottle over the filter. Can pinch the bottle to turn the filter and the bottle will catch the oil coming out as you remove the filter.

It helps to run the engine for a few minutes to heat up the oil. It drains faster that way.

Cool to see you do a maintenance video, excellent. My push mower is planned as my next one. If you have ever forgotten to coat some oil on the filter's gasket before installing, you know when you try to remove it next time and it's melted to the gasket seat and won't release. For the drips I just stick some newspaper under fuel/oil/lines/filters to catch the spills.

Great tips, thanks Seth. I need to do this shortly on a RedMax but it also has a Kawasaki engine so perfect. Thank you.

If you cut a plastic oil container in half and put under the oil filter it will catch that oil.

A friend just gave me one of these for free, just needs a new battery and tune up as it's been sitting in his shed for a few years since he retired his landscaping business

What engineer who graduated last in his/her class designed such a mess? When I change my Toyota oil filter, don't spill a single drop because of the quite-nice design. Is there a way to prevent oil from the Oil Filter from spilling like that on the Raptor?

What size tube did you use to run from the drain to the catch pan?
