Полюшко поле - Oh Fields, My Fields

Composed by Lev Knipper with the lyrics by Viktor Gusev in 1933, this recognizable Soviet melody is sung from the perspective of a new Red Army recruit who proudly leaves his home in order to fight against the Motherland’s enemies. Many rendition of this melody have been performed, most notably by the Alexandrov Ensemble.

We sang this at school in the 1970s, in Finnish of course, and I never knew it was a Soviet song; I just thought it was Russian! We also sang "Joe Hill", with neutralised Finnish words - I wonder if our teacher knew who Joe Hill was; at least I did not. Only afterwards I understood what kind of songs there were hidden in our song book in those radical times...
