The Ford Maverick! An (actually) small pickup truck with a standard hybrid powertrain targeting 40 mpg AND a base price just under $20,000. With most new vehicles selling for more than ever, a brand new truck with utility, technology and a serious value proposition is refreshing to see. While its based on the same platform as the Ford Escape, strengthening means competitive payload and towing capacity. We were recently up at Road America for a journalist media event where we got the opportunity to do a full interior and exterior walkaround, check out some of the details and take the Maverick Lariat Hybrid for an on road drive!

The hybrid does NOT use a traditional CVT with belts and pulleys. It has an eCVT which uses a planetary gearset and electric motors. Much less moving components than a standard Automatic or CVT and in theory should be MORE reliable. I was hesitant to order a Hybrid Maverick because of the CVT, but then I learned about the eCVT and it made me want the hybrid even more. Now I just have to wait months and months until the EPA certifies the Hybrid and it can actually be shipped to customers.

Wish reviewers would do more research. This is not a CVT transmission, but eCVT which is not at all the same thing.

it's crazy how large standard trucks like the f150 are getting. I'm glad smaller trucks are gaining popularity again.

Do you really drive with your seat all the way back and at a 35 percent incline? Most people do not and the room in the back seat is more than enough.

is it possible to sleep at the rear seat?

Just an FYI comparison of the Maverick's combined legroom & 2nd Row Headroom -

Combined Legroom -
Maverick - 78.7"
Ranger - 77.6"
Santa Cruz - 77.6"
Ridgeline - 77.6"
Tacoma - 75.5"

2nd Row Headroom -
Maverick -39.6"
Ridgeline - 38.8"
Tacoma - 38.3"
Ranger - 38.3"
Colorado - 38.3 "

So it's pretty good, I ordered the Lariat AWD with the 2.0 Ecoboost, FX4 package, Luxury package, Ford Co-Pilot. I used to own F150's when my kids were younger, but now that I'm retired this Maverick will do everything that I need. So it works for me.

The Hybrid Maverick uses an CVT, eCVT not a standard CVT. I would not touch a normal CVT with a 10 foot pole... an eCVT however is a completely different animal.

The cvt is not a downside, isn’t a traditional belt driven cvt, it has planetary gears like regular transmissions with the electric motors

Definitely a buyer here if the price stays at msrp. I know there are people that use and need a full size truck, but I downsize to a Colorado 3 years ago and haven’t had any need for anything bigger. Happy to see Ford adding an affordable option to truck owners.

Nice! I'll definitely buy one if the industry-wide vehicle shortage doesn't drive the price of Mavericks up.

6'3 and plenty of room even when you lose a few inches with the moonroof. That takes away some of my worries.

Just got mine yesterday. I’m six feet and l have plenty of room and can actually get in the back seat. The dash is tacky but nice little truck.

Reminds me of the Mitsubishi Mighty Max. Perfect sizing for commuter with light duty weekend needs.

You should know cruisenis not available on the xl mav and the ranger has even less legroom

1:48 probably has the tow hitch receiver and hookup under the cover. Or it’s a blanking plate so if you don’t buy the tow package it’s just covered vs an empty hole.

I thought it was on the Explorer platform not Escape..

I've seen many other reviews also by guys over 6 feet tall. Most confirmed when they sat in back the legroom was a bit tight. I'm 5'9" and wife is 5' 4" and grand daughters are about 5" so back seat legroom won't be an issue. I ordered my Lariat back in late June and just got an EM from Ford that my build date will be Dec 6th. I should receive it in Jan (I'm guessing, shipping ya know). I currently have a 2013 Frontier and only get 16 mpg around town and the LITTLE display screen is way too small. All that and I'm looking forward to seeing/buying the new truck.

Best looking wheels I've seen yet. Don't care for the base steelies nor the black wheel look. These are at least decent. The whole wheel line up is just ok.
Damped, not dampened 😉. Dampened is... Wet.

That small LCD screen with empty hole next to it would drive me crazy.
