Atmospheric River Flooding of Australia and Elsewhere

I chat in detail about atmospheric rivers and how they have been hammering Australia, especially near heavily populated regions like Brisbane and Sydney on the eastern coastline.

A recent paper projects that atmospheric river flooding events over Sydney will increase up to 80% by the turn of the century, according to an ensemble of 16 climate models.

I show you the tools that you can use (Climate Reanalyzer, Earth NullSchool, NOAA sites, etc.) to have a detailed look at any catastrophic extreme weather event that is heading in your direction. For example, some of the worst flooding that is happening real-time at the time of filming of this video is in Durban, South Africa.

faster, more extreme and less regularly timed, with added fire and drought
But, ...don't worry. Sooner rather than later 100%of the Globes population will agree, it's time to do something.

Some nice watching on a rainy day in Australia. (half way between Sydney and Brisbane)

very helpful overview to understand better the atmospheric rivers. i am very grateful for this longer format video (very happy that you did NOT break this up into 3 arbitrarily short 15-minute separate videos).

"Pineapples have indeed for a long time been a symbol of Hawaiʻi but they are not native to the Hawaiian islands. Pineapples can be traced back to their origin in South America, and are linked together with Hawaiʻi because of the large pineapple industry that was build on Hawaiʻi in the early 1900s....only in Hawai`i, as a result of special pleadings by the Hawai`i pineapple plantations and the highest officials in state government, would use of DBCP be allowed to extend past 1981.

DBCP was specifically developed in the 1950s for use in Hawaiian pineapple fields. It had been used since 1958 as the preferred method of controlling nematodes, or root worms, in drier areas of pineapple cultivation, such as Lana`i, Moloka`i, and much of Maui. Ethylene dibromide, or EDB, was used mainly to control pineapple nematodes in wetter areas, especially on the central O`ahu plain.

For almost as long as DBCP was in use, received wisdom held that water supplies — at least in Hawai`i — were pretty safe from contamination. DBCP was believed to bind tightly to soil or degrade on exposure to air, although little evidence seems to have been gathered to support these beliefs....
Maui Land & Pine was hoping to be able to avoid paying hazardous-waste disposal costs for the 27, 951 pounds of DBCP it had on hand by negotiating with a Tucson, Arizona, company that wanted to ship the DBCP to Mexico. By June 1986, however, Maui Land & Pine had given up on that plan. Instead, it contracted with Bay Area Environmental, a hazardous waste disposal company based in Richmond, California, and on June 27, 1986, the last stocks of unused DBCP known to remain on the islands were shipped out.

* * *
A Time Bomb

While use of DBCP on Maui effectively ended in 1984, tons of the chemical remain in the soil."
Pineapple River indeed

Hi :) quick Question : how high would the sea get ( landmass lost ) if all the atmosphere rivers released all of their water at the same time due to upper atmospheres (4? Layers ?) pressures pushing down hard ? As you said that they release their water because of pressure of going up over mountains to release their moisture as snow and rain ? Just a random thought :)

Excellent presentation Paul. Thanks for explaining atmospheric rivers and the quick update on current climate catastrophe weather systems happening around the world. Peace, Calvin.

I greatly appreciate your intellectual contributions about climat change and the detailed insights you provide, difficult to overstate. I have no problelem enduring your appeal to the cat videos crowd, and it's kind of nice including variety of a sort. I dislike when you incorporate your opinions about the mainstream political narratives that imo are far less relevant(and I typically have different viewpoints about) I don't really believe race is that big an issue prior to corporate media creating it, I agreed with the truckers in the protest in Canada and elsewhere. Another thing I really appreciated was your research and contributions about the science of Covid from the very beginning and throughout. Opinions present bias, but science and facts present education and knowledge, the latter is why I follow you, and promote your work. Thank you very much Paul, for all your work in this regard.

I understand the anthropocentric way of grading these atmospheric rivers along with other types of storms. I think it would be good to come up with more ways of conveying the way we humans cause radically increased extreme weather volatility and how we might reduce our negative impacts on our habitat that cause these trends.
Ah, well - it currently seems that our fate is to support just enough research to document our ecocidal culture’s impacts, while not allowing such information to enter into the analytical feedback loops of public discourse or public policy-formation.
We could not be collectively be causing more pain and death on our planet if we tried to do so on purpose.
Former US President Eisenhower gave a speech called “The Cross of Iron” speech as he was leaving office. He stated that with the rise of the military-industrial complex we were crucifying the people of the earth on a cross of iron.
We are crucifying the earth itself on a cross of iron - but our torture is far more terrible even than that.
I wonder if we can find a way to have reverence and love for life again?
I wonder if we can choose to nurture life?

Thank you for making your videos .very informative .air fresh water rivers never new about these .I was taught (asked a question about were rain came from and was told by grandad ) that the rain is evaporated sea water that goes over land and mountains and trees pushed and pulled by the winds and that the trees cause rain to fall by releasing their own moisture to cause it to rain on them. so no trees equaled no rain in arid areas .but i guess thats wrong with these air atmosphere fresh water rivers moving by the winds and upper air pressures .wonder what electric in atmosphere does to these air rivers or the thinning strength of the magnetic fields.or the movement of the racing magnetic south up and north pole speeding up moving down . with/will these effecting the jet streams .as their lower down a mile/ kilomiter ? above soil level .makes you think .thank you very much :) I'm going to watch this a few times to take try to take it all in .thank you for explaining what is on the screen (not many do ) great for a learner like me . Why is this important stuff not taught in normal schools ?hum .but nature is amazing :) yes puppy to adult in a year but act/play like puppies all their lives no time passes for dogs they live in the moment :)

I didn't know there was a model for Atmospheric Rivers similar to a Saffir-Simpson scale. 7:40.

Hi Paul,
Are we currently experiencing an atmospheric river in New Zealand? Tropical airflow is streaming into the East Coast of the North Island in what looks a lot like an AR to me.. Love to hear your thoughts!
