If you are a listener of the Bill Burr podcast you know that he is a helicopter pilot. He has talked a lot over the last year about training, studying, and testing for instrument only flying. Once he talked about a phenomenon where helicopter pilots in 'instrument only' flying conditions can become so disoriented that they feel like they are flying at strange angles and that things are going wrong, even though everything is fine. In other words, they get freaked out, don't trust their instruments, try to correct a problem that does not exist, and then possibly crash. He hasn't talked about this specifically since the crash occurred, but I'll be interested in hearing his thoughts when he decides to talk about the technical aspects of this.

Tragedy all around - very sad for all of those left behind to mourn the loss.

Completely heartbreaking for all surviving family and friends. How do you find closure in a situation like this? Love and prayers go out to the family members. May all involved find peace.

my uncle used to fly helicopters for the army, once i asked him what was the worst think that can happen to an helicopter pilot and he told me ''fog, becuase you dont know where is up and where is down and your instruments could fail or not be calibrated. years later he crashed in a very foggy day. RIP.

I grew up 5 minutes from where the crash happened. I know this area, I know that mountain. I've driven past it countless times and hiked in mountains very close to here. It's unfortunately all too easy for me to picture it happening and the thought of a larger than life legend like Kobe, his precious daughter with a bright future ahead of her, and the other parents and children crashing like that just haunts me.

its gonna be Paul Walker all over again. The bodies are gonna be unrecognizable. And a closed casket. Which is sad. Vanessa and her children wont be able to kiss there love ones goodbye. Same with everyone on board.

From the NTSB saying the rotor was on the other side I think they approached the hill fast, saw it probably within a few feet. Tried to climb, hit the tail and lost into the hill when the tail snapped and fell down the other side of the hill... very sad for all 9 of them. Unfortunate.

Previous helicopter crash sites I have seen cannot compare to this. They didn't stand a chance. So very sad for all the families.

I guess one of the big questions is, had the pilot full controll over his helicopter, when it descended as fast as it did. RIP

I've been asked, off line, to delete my comment about schedule pressure being a cause of this accident. Go read NTSB accident reports for private jet and helicopter crashes. Schedule pressure is one of the top reasons for crashes in this category. Unlike an airline pilot, a private captain can lose their livelihood for putting safety over expediency because the wealthy travelers just won't hire them. This comment is not disrepectful to Kobe, it's a warning call that part of the aircraft transport industry isn't regulated well. As the number of private and fractional jets climb in number, so will the frequency of this type of accident.
