Use antifreeze for the testing fluid; it settles out quicker. Water takes several hours, like overnight!

You poured in 40 ml of gas into 10 ml of water. If the gas had 10% to 15% of ethanol in it, I would think your water line would be at 14 to 16 ml instead of the 10 mm initially pouring in. I am a math and physics guy; I hated chemistry and biology.
