Listen to the full episode now on Apple Podcasts:

“It’s a rigged game.” - Jon Stewart spoke to Strict Scrutiny – law professors Leah Litman, Melissa Murray, and Kate Shaw — on the podcast last June about what the Supreme Court has done to protect minority rule. It’s happening at the state level too – like in Ohio where people are voting today on Issue 1, which would make it more difficult to protect abortion rights in the state constitution this fall.

American democracy truly is special. Instead of voters picking their politicians, the politicians get to pick their voters!

...And the gerrymandering makes it worse for their own constituents by selecting more extreme and less qualified candidates.

It's like asking corporations to police and regulate themselves.

Citizens United, almost 14 years ago, BROKE Our Checks and Balances. 😢 As a History teacher, it broke my heart, to teach through Trump's Administration. 50 years after MLK died and we are moving backwards. Again. 💔

To see who is cheating and gerrymandering is pretty easy.

Just ask the parties, if they would accept an impartial independent non-partisan group to do all the districting, so it accurately represents the population.

Any party that complains is cheating gerrymanders.

PS. Don't get distracted by red herrings about how such a body isn't possible in the US political landscape. That isn't the point.

The Ohio State legislature is trying to rig it a little more today by raising the threshold for citizens to overrule them with issue 1. But yeah, scotus represents around 35 or 40% of America, the rest can pound salt.

I remember the decision on gerrymandering. That was the moment I lost all respect for the supreme court

In Minnesota we were able to establish in law a Legislative Coordinating Commission that is non-partisan and draws up voting districts during appropriating. The tea party types yelled about it but thankfully level heads prevailed.

Its time for people to take the power and the money back from these corporations run governments

Something needs to be done about this. The American People should be in control of electing our leaders, not the leaders rigging it so they stay in power.

Here in the 112th district of North Carolina, Patricia Cotham was elected as a Democrat to serve in the North Carolina House, got to Raleigh and flipped to Republican, voting against everything she ran on!!

they know it is rigged, they just don't realize who is doing the rigging. Look at your state to see how they did it.
