Richard Harlow from the show boardwalk empire is a very good example of this. Or at least how it would have actually looked in person.

Having a grandfather in WWI it is deeply heartbreaking what so many went through. How ungrateful most are today for these men n women gave their all for us 😢

In about 1980, I was doing plastics research in Southern California. I wound up doing some work with a sculptor who was working with me on a prosthetics project. 1 day I was at his shop and one of his clients came by to take him out to lunch. I met the man, who was something like these soldiers. I learned later that he was out hiking and camping in the woods of Wisconsin. They set up their tent and hung their food from a tree branch above the tent to keep it away from animals. In the middle of the night, they were wakened by the tent collapsing on top of them. A bear was trying to climb the tent to get at the food. His friend got out with his .22 rifle and climbed a tree. The guy I met was under the bear and wiggling to get out. The bear bit his face removing flesh and skull from right forehead to the jawline. His friend drove the bear away by repeatedly shooting it with the .22 rifle from close range. Like bees driving a human away by stinging them. Not generally life threatening, but irritating enough to drive him away. He was at the shop to have a spare face made. When he removed it I saw that under the grafted skin, the right side of his face was a flat plane at an angle. Like it was sliced off with a machete. His prosthetic was made of vinyl, rather than the copper used in the story above.

My eldest brother, US Navy retired, a maxillofacial prosthodontist, was involved in the first classes to teach. On leave in the early 1970’s, he’d bring home an eyeball he’d made from looking in the mirror. Another time, it was a set of teeth. We saw books of other ways of healing/replacing something lost.

60% of the battlefield casualties in WWI were caused by artillery shells exploding. Shrapnel wounds were particularly brutal for soldiers. The word 'shrapnel' comes from the small lead balls placed in an artillery shell that would spread out over the battlefield when exploded.
