Shortest wait for Howlin Ray's is in the morning. Doors open at 11am, but if you get there by 9am you should be...10th in line, lol. The fantastic staff at Howlin Ray's also add to the experience. Walked away many a times with an extra piece of chicken or even an extra sandwich.

I wish Howlin' Rays would branch out to large cities nationwide. (I've asked!) One lone location in Los Angeles (with long lines) doesn't give me hope that I'll ever get the chance to try it.

I’ve been to many different fried chicken spots here in LA and nothing compares to Howlin Rays. I usually go two hours before opening time . If you get lucky, you find the owner there . He’s super cool, he gives free food

When going to Dave's you should really go to the Hollywood location. The NoHo spot is their new location, but want to get that original since it's slightly better in terms of texture.

Nice review. First time watching your channel.
Have you tried Hotville Chicken? It’s off of Crenshaw in the Baldwin Hills Mall. The owner, Kim Prince says her relatives started hot chicken in the 1930’s. I saw a YouTube clip of the Los Angeles Times Food going to Howling Ray’s with Ms. Prince.

I know this videos old but I'll tell you this about howlin oppose to daves
I've been going to both for years now and I can say with all honesty that Howlin beats Dave's
Howlins hospitality just out right beats Dave's and I can honestly say that Howlin appeals to all the senses.
I've waited 7 hours once after the holidays with a cousin who was in town. They were so nice they hooked us up with free Pickels, frys and kindness
Truly nuts 🌷

Dave’s hot chicken started using frozen chicken shipped from a warehouse. It’s no longer marinated at the restaurant. It has completely changed the flavor and quality of the chicken it’s bland and tasteless The pieces are smaller And I feel overall it’s going to destroy the franchise because it’s basically a bait and switch by corporate.
They got people loving and enjoying, which was truly a masterpiece of a recipe and delicious!
Now it’s like eating prepackaged, frozen chicken tenders, which can be bought at Costco, and then seasoned with hot spice, however I’m not comparing it to that but the pricing and the quality is no longer worth going in and spending the money for the product the consumers receiving at Dave’s hot chicken. It literally went from a 10 to 3 on the flavor and quality of the finished product being served to the consumer now.

This is what I wrote tonight on a different YT video on Howlin Ray’s that was a few years old:

This was filmed several years ago. After seeing it (and having loved Chef Johnny on Cutthroat Kitchen), the family and I went to Howlin Ray’s in August 2019. First, the line was STILL 2+ hours long. I’m sure the scarcity they created keeps the buzz and interest alive (people want to be a part of something popular/trendy or that feels exclusive), but all I could think of in line is how much money they are turning away every day. The place inside is tiny. One register. Basically no place to sit. There are a ton of empty spaces in this run-down strip mall. If they just expanded to one or two additional spaces, they could serve hundreds more people each day. But I’m not a restaurant owner, so what do I know? I assume he’s thought of this and has a reason for keeping things as they are.

Ok, the food. It was very good, but I can’t imagine waiting even 25% of the usual wait time more than once for this (or almost any food). You literally will wait 2-3 hours for a chicken sandwich or wings (very good ones, but it can only be so good). Chalk it up to an experience you do once. (Now maybe things are different mid week, or now with coronavirus.)

Back to the food. It is unbelievably spicy. You can tell that it’s the spiciest, most painful food (the YouTuber) had ever had. It’s not fun or enjoyable (for me at least); just painful and appetite/day ruining. To be clear, I am not someone who eats real spicy hot sauce or peppers. I use regular Mexican hot sauce, but not crazy specialty stuff. My sons like stuff much spicier than me. They ordered the “Hot” level. Halfway through the sandwich, their lips were totally swollen, they were sweating like they were in a rain storm, and they ended up literally sucking on things of blue ice from the cooler in our car.

I think for most people, even the level Hot will be quite unpleasant. I cannot even imagine anyone enjoying X-tra Hot, much less Howlin, and definitely not the off-the-menu Howlin+ If they are smart, they require customers to sign a liability waiver before allowing anyone to order Howlin or Howlin+.

I’m sure there are people who not only can eat those upper level ones, but at least somewhat enjoy them. God bless you, and I tip my hat. But beware, this is nothing like wings n things or any place like that (whatever is the absolute spiciest wing at Wings n Things is probably equal to a medium here). Good luck!!

Well Howlin Rays still only has two locations while Dave's is across the nation now.
