Saidona is a mountainous village of western Mani, at an altitude of about 600 m., 54 km from Kalamata and 13 km from the beach of Stoupa, amphitheatrically built on the southwest side of Mount Sotiritsa, at the foot of Taygetos. Those who passed by this place, praised the beauty of the village in the environment composed of huge oak trees and flowing waters, with the cobbled narrow streets and the old traditional stone houses overlooking the sea. Moreover, the beauty of the landscape and the existence of many nightingales are said to be the reason for the name of the village (Aydona-San Aydona-Saidona).
Kastania or Kastanea or Megali Kastania is one of the oldest and most picturesque mountain settlements of Messinian Mani. It is built at an altitude of 560 meters, below the Mavrovouna peak of Taygetos, 50km SE of Kalamata and 15 km from Kardamyli. The village remains unseen even up close, built between three slopes of Taygetos, in a naturally fortified location, with few and narrow access roads.
A remarkable feature of Kastania is the stone roofs of the houses, made of slabs in the colour of the natural stone of the area, while the fountain with its huge walnut trees in the village square is a point of reference, especially during the hot summer months.
Right between the two villages (2.5 km from one and 2.5 km from the other) a plot of 6,320 square meters is for sale.
It is located outside the city plan or settlements but it is even and buildable since it is over 4,000 square meters.
The view from the plot, apart from being unobstructed, is also impressive since apart from the Messinian Gulf it "sees" from above and all the villages of Western Mani.
