That's absolutely not the reason why it's expensive. It is expensive because most European nations chose Euro fighter Typhoon, that's literally how Rafael project started, France wanted a different fighter. Consequently they can't sell it to other Europeans and there's very little market outside to purchase an overpriced 4gen fighter. It is expensive because production numbers are low.

It's actually a lot cheaper.
The Rafale costs arround 110 to 130 million dollars, while the F-35 starts from 170 million dollars.

It's expensive because it's probably the most well rounded fighter in the world today.
It can carry a hefty payload including the Meteor (the most lethal BVR missile in existence), it can land on carriers, it can supercruise, has an extremely advanced radar and EW suite, it's very agile and most importantly the customers receive a wide range of weapons and very extensive pilot training with every purchase.

Where did you find these numbers? Rafale comes with a tag price around 110-120 million. Furthermore F-35 wouldn't be cheaper if the development cost was rolled over to the clients, instead of draining the US budget with huge amounts, not appearing in the tag price. This is not the case with France's Rafale that has not the luxury of a program that "cannot fail" and needs money feeding all the time! Rafale is a succesful program built in time and not overcosted. F-35 is a money black hole, fed by tax-payer's money and undercosted. If someone ever summoned up its real cost, it would be 3-4 times the tag price...

What many people don't know is that the Rafale is expensive to buy but much less expensive to maintain and the F 35 is expensive to maintain but less expensive to buy and all aeronautics experts agree on this point. The Rafale is also very sophisticated, and it is a multi-pro fighter plane and it is constantly evolving.

F-35 costs between 143 and 300 millions ( $ )per jet.
The Rafale costs between 68 and 78 millions ( € ) per jet.

The rafale is multirole, fighter, bomber, interceptor, nuclear bomber, he can attack troops on ground, and more.
The F-35 is exclusive fighter, not multirole, if u want make other role with F-35 u need pay for modification.

Rafale is more interesting. 😊
