What Danielle said. I was privileged to see him speak when I was 11, just 3 weeks before his assassination. He was anti capitalism, anti imperialism, anti war and specifically Vietnam. He was killed because of this—not by some lone gunman. I dread the holiday because of the whitewashing of his legacy and his movement. I honor him always.

I remember when they made MLK Day a holiday. I was upset that they were closing schools on that day. To me it would have made more sense to learn about civil rights that entire day. I forget how old my daughter was, she was in elementary school. And I asked her if she knew who Martin Luther King jr. was? And she said I think he was the king of America. I still wish they took the other four days of that week to learn about civil rights and what went down in the late sixties.

Mitch McConnell was working in congress when MLKjr was alive!!!! He was working as a legislative assistant for senator Marlow Cook, starting in 1968. He's literally been in congress since MLKjr was murdered!!

King’s introduction to civil disobedience was through Bayard Rustin, an out gay black man. King supported gay rights, but focused on abolishing legalized segregation in the South first. He was assassinated before accomplishing either goal.
