At least on german cars, the 'reserve tank' aka whats left after the range says 0, is usually 5 liters. The pump cant pysically get the tank and fuel lines completely dry, but with an efficient car that can still mean up to 100km, especially at constant speed on a motorway.

I'd expect similar results in most vehicles. The manufacturers know we're going to be stupid and run our vehicles to empty - so they just design the gauge to say you're empty when you in fact have 1/8 of a tank or so left.
