So I already know this will get people riled up so lemme clear something up. Yes, Powercreep obviously "exists". The point is, it doesn't matter. Hu Tao is still extremely good, Kazuha is still one of the best characters in the game, alongside Arlecchino and Xilonen. Genshin is not a competitive game, Arlecchino being slightly better means legit nothing. If you "can't" 36 star with Hu Tao so you pull for Arlecchino, my guy that's a straight up skill issue. You can 36 star the abyss with 4 stars only, so there is no "need" for 5 stars based off strength.

When you pull for a character BECAUSE they're good, not because you like/want them, you've lost and game has won. I just want to help people avoid regretful pulls and play the game how THEY want, not how the company wants you to play.

Power creep definitely exists but the endgame content isn’t hard enough for the slight upgrade to matter. Also with universal supports like kazuha and Xilonen having both just means one for each side of the abyss

Genshin power creep isn't only new characters can be good it's new characters are MUCH easier to make strong

I AM A DEDICATED CYNO MAIN. i have MANY meta characters that have been benched bc i like cyno more. i like his play style, i like his design, i like his voice - i adore cyno as a character. when the mondstadt banner came around i got albedo, who is my favorite character in the game (like all time favorite). i have him with navia and even got him chiori’s sword. is chiori better meta-wise? maybe. is xilonen better? probably. do i care?

I think this short, semantics aside, gets at the heart of why powercreep doesn't function the same in Genshin as it does in other games. People talk about powercreep when referencing newer characters that do more damage than older ones, but in reality, that's only a consequence of powercreep as I would define it, which is when new endgame content (enemies, mechanics, time limits, score thresholds, PvP, etc.) changes, and actively punishes use of older characters.

Generally speaking, the damage ceiling will always get higher as a live-service gacha game goes on once the character and equipment pool increases, but Genshin for better or worse makes that less of a problem when the threshold you have to meet for endgame rewards doesn't 1:1 match the pace of the ceiling increase.

There's nuance for sure once you start talking about character niches and utility, which is where characters like Venti, Ayaka, or early 4-star DPS characters come into the conversation, and it's also not as if there's only one correct definition of what "powercreep" even is, but the reason Genshin experiences less powercreep than other games is explained well in this short: there's not much that actively makes older characters worse. It's the heart of why true "meta" advice means much less in a game like Genshin than it does in say Honkai Impact 3rd, where older characters are rendered truly obsolete in the face of 8 years of powercreep and a system where endgame rewards are determined by leaderboard rankings with other players.

I used to be a meta guy too. But with all the new playstyles genshin is implementing with natlan like kinich and another character coming soon, I am caring less about meta than ever before cuz I know they'll be good if I'm able to run them with the supports they need.

People need to mix up their teams more, the way characters can boost others is incredible. I’m having so much fun trying content with weird combination teams and some of the result have been surprisingly strong so that I’m going to start using them (and actually finish building them)

its only because this game's possible power ceiling is MILES higher than it's required power floor for any content. power creep definitely exists in other games, but not really this one

Thank you, someone who gets it. Genshin is a primarily a single experience game, the only real PvP is in online communities. Power creep literally doesn't matter. As long as you're playing characters you like and you don't have problems killing enemies (or even if you do, but you're happy with your experience) then you're playing the game right.

I do think there is something to be said—yes people will have skill issues and if they want a character that has easier gameplay they will have to come to terms with that and balance that. I love Xiao and Scara but I have too much skill issue to reliably 36* with them. That’s ok. I pulled them and their weapons anyways and now they sit pretty, because I don’t even want them to suffer in abyss lol

Power creep does exist genshin just handles it better than most gacha’s

In my opinion, true powercreep is when a character does EXACTLY (ex: playstyle, QoL, etc. not damage numbers) what an older one does, but "better". I dont think anyone fits that category

Yeah I realized that as well after pulling for a 'meta' character I wasn't interested in. Like it helped me in abyss a lot but it didn't really make me happy.

Im f2p and this short made me really happy as I am going to wish for hutao and arlechino 😅. Dont care about the meta and wish for favorite characters

Meta is only for people that can't think by themselves
Playing with charecters and using builds made by others the way they tell them to play
There's no human decision past "i'm gonna play and build this charecter cuz X or the wiki said is good"

I'm stuck at AR50 and i can't beat bosses faster but at leas i'm playing on my own, learning and testing everything by myself
And so far i've just pulled for my favorite charecters ever since i started playing
Navia, Yelan, Mualani, Raiden and i'm going for Xilonen, although i wish i could get Chori too
This banner is really hard for me, the first time i want both charecters but Xilonen has my priority ever since she was announced

I started playing recently, and my first 5 star was Navia. Then I got Kazuha and Xilonen - and I love them both. They both in their own way have made playing so much more fun than before. They buff my characters but also improve how I travel within the game. They will always, along with Navia, hold a special place in the game for me. I teenie bit like Kazuha more, but just a tad bit more. I am pulling for Arlecchino next because as soon as I saw someone in co-op with her I wanted her - I didn’t even know how broken or meta (or even what those words meant) she is, but just her design and her attacks made me want her. Same with Furina - I feel her design is one of the best in her game - love, love her outfit. Makes me, who never cosplays, want to cosplay her. So she is also on my wish list. And lastly Alhaitham - that character is just dashing! I want him on my team. Luckily I pulled for Nahida (who I actually have been enjoying playing with Kazuha), so I am ready for Alhaitham now too. I hope he reruns at some point in 2025 🤞🏽 I know arlecchino is coming in January and Furina in 5.4 most likely, so my Alhaitham is just unknown of when I’ll get him 😢.
I have already gotten almost everything to build Arlecchino as soon as I get her (I am guaranteed), and then will start gathering materials for Furina (already have quite a bit). And after that regardless of when Alhaitham gets his rerun I will start farming and preparing for him 😆

As a veteran player I can tell you power creep definitely did exist once.. when i got venti i was soo happy until kasuha was released..
