That's lovely, Jon. I really appreciate the old covers from science fiction books. My only regret for switching over to ebooks is the copyrights for the covers sometimes don't carry over to the newer ebook, so oftentimes they go cheap. 😡🤬🙄🙄

I became a graphic designer because of my fascination for movie posters, book covers and CD artworks, and I was able to work in all three fields. But I was always limited to stock images and Photoshop, while those artists were able to create sometimes photorealistic images beyond our imagination with some brushstrokes, out of nowhere. It’s a shame that they aren’t as popular as the old masters.

Fantastic! How I loathe the loss of beautiful SF cover art. The 70s were the heyday for me- artists like Foss, Pennington and Pelham. I used to buy SF Monthly which had huge reproductions of SF art.

Does look like a worthwhile dip into the art of the 70s and nice to see one where the images are collected by theme.

As an art lover and -collector I always enjoy art in sci-fi books, and will recommend "Expedition" by Wayne Douglas Barlowe, grab it if you find it!

8:20 those habitats were the first pictures I ever saw of such orbitals aside from more mechanical looking space stations. Don Davis painted the Stanford Torus design on the upper right. A physicist joked that they were shopping malls in space. I see his point. If the initial cost and creation can be overcome would capitalism survive within? People want to go to Mars and such but I am more of a space habitat guy.

I devoted a video to this book around 18 months ago. It has some nice splash pages, but I felt the text was dreadful. It's a rare thing now for anyone to publish SF art books though,

Ah that's the world of null-a cover on the first page, I received a copy of this last week and specifically chose that edition for the cool cover

It's strange that there is a Mark Salwowski image in there. I believe he was living in Australia in the 1970s. I knew Tim White would be included in the book. 😊 I actually have three collections of his book cover art, published by Paper Tiger. My copy of Ursula Le Guin's "The Left Hand of Darkness" has a cover illustration by Tim White. In fact, he did two covers for that novel.

2:13 this 'surrealist ' image is more constructivist, reminiscent of Bauhaus design or perhaps Goethe's colour theory work that prefigured it.

Ouch, lol lol you made me lol about comparing the images for 'Rendezvous with Rama'. .... I liked the first book, but from then on, the books got worse.

That’s a lovely looking book 😍 I have to be ultra-selective with my big book choices, from lack of shelf space because I’ve packed them tightly together to fit more paperbacks in 🫣
