A job interview isn’t just for the company to interview you, it’s so you can ‘interview’ the company, too!

On top of asking questions throughout, you can use the end of the interview to ask questions about the company to see if it would be a good fit for you. Here’s a few questions you can ask and red flags that might pop up in the answers -

➡️ What’s the salary range for this position? If they won’t provide a general compensation ban for you, it doesn’t mean you should automatically ditch the position, but keep in mind that you’ll want to do thorough market research to ensure you’re being paid fairly
➡️ What are the benefits for this position? If they mention unlimited PTO, ask if it’s actually used by employees - if not, that speaks to the company culture
➡️ Why did the previous incumbent of this role leave? If the employee who had this position last was promoted, that’s great! It speaks to the career path you could have, too. But, if they left because of the working conditions, that’s something to think about

What’s the biggest job interview red flag you can think of? Let us know!

HUGE red flag. Typically, a job will be posted once it has been approved by finance for an allotted salary. Major yikes if they don’t disclose pay early on. Definitely don’t move forward with a company that does this!

I never thought about unlimited PTO that way before. Definitely a red flag

I've worked at a lot of places with "unlimited PTO". I've never seen it actually work.

The interview for my last job was a panel interview (technical position requiring experience). I asked what the turnover rate for the unit was and how it had changed in size over time (was it expanding or shrinking), what the company's 5 year plan for the area was, how often the systems were maintained and updated, whether the company paid workers to attend off-campus classes offered by the companies whose software we used, etc.

The questions caught the interviewers off guard, and made the HR representative nervous, but the folks I would be working with liked that I wasn't afraid to ask reasonable, topic related questions. I ended up working there 11 years.

Just as a company wants to know about you. you should know what the company has in mind for you.

I work for a startup that offers unlimited PTO. My work hours are crazy long, but I take 4-5 weeks of cumulative PTO off every year.

But totally agree on employers that do not disclose pay ranges. I don't even waste my time applying for those because they almost are always low-balling and are a waste of my time.

I agree that all of those things are red flags but you definitely don't want to ask about them directly because it will make you look like a bad candidate even if it's a good company. You've got to ask indirectly

Red flag for sure retail manager at cricket wireless store doesn’t make $25-29 an hour 😂. The interviewer said it depends on performance. Last time I checked I was a theater student at middle school and high school. 😂. He declined me the offer because I caught him red-handed .

Try saying that first reply to a recruiter and count on not getting an offer.

When you ask about the previous worker and they say the turnover rate is high or it’s hard to keep people in that role run don’t walk do not pass go do not collect $200.. fr lol 😂 I learned the hard way.

Not a red flag yet as you haven't been offered the job. Money only comes up when the job is in play.
