“That javelin really could’ve hurt someone”, that’s literally what it was invented for

It must be a great compliment to know that your perfomance actually forced a major change in the event.

When I was at school there was a girl who was just awesome. We had a sports carnival at a local private school ground and the girls javelin was held near the road. She asked for it to be moved but the sports teacher said no, since moving it would take room away from other sports and girls can't throw far anyway. She warned that she would be throwing towards the road. Sports teacher said it's fine. She threw the javelin, it slid over the power lines. She cut power to a suburb for a day and damaged a car when it fell off the lines. I think spite may have given her an edge. She almost made it to the 2000 olympics but her parents couldn't afford tuition or something.

Fun fact: after the javelin change the longest throw was 98, 48 meters by Jan Železný in 1996 and this record stands to this day

This short should really be mentioning Jan Zelezny, the best javelin thrower of all time. This man threw it over 98 meters on the new and updated javelin. They made a javelin that was thought to be impossible to throw close to 100 meters and Zelezny threw it over 98 freaking meters. He was a legend that dominated javelin throwing for decades and there is no one who has even come close to having the run he had. His record is still valid all these decades later.

This monster trained India's Neeraj Chopra. Can't imagine someone facing him in a a Greek Battlefield in BC. Must be like how Brad Pitt threw the spear in Troy.

Feel like that should be a separate record then. It's like doubling the weight of the shotput and keeping it in the same record category

I knew a former east german athlete. He had no idea what they put him on until they opened the files after the reunification.

In the Ancient Greek Olympics, the javelin was an accuracy contest (there was a target, not an attempt for distance.
