The fact that he coached the current Olympic javelin winner, India's first and only gold speaks volumes to just how good he is.

I would love to see what current athletes could throw with the old style Javelin

"The throw was unparalleled" - looked downright parabolic to me

Hohn was already physically exceptional, at 1.98 metres tall and a competition weight of 116 kg, he was a giant with an incredible throwing arm.

That throw looks incredible. He launches it with such power he almost falls over and it takes off like a lightning bolt! Legendary

Look at the distances Hahn threw the NEW javelin. He broke the "old" world record prior to his, but not his personal best. What an incredible athlete.

Another reason why the design was changed can be seen at 3:46. Many of the throws with the old design were landing in a flat angle and then gliding forwards in the ground which put the officials and other athletes in danger. The balance point of newer javelin design meant that the javelins are now sticking to the ground on landing.

I simply love the fact that he took the challenge to coach someone from a country that's not really recognized in track and field .... That is a real coaching test.... prof that he has the secret to success in this event.

"Let's see who can throw these javelins the farthest..."

"They're throwing them too far, make it harder to throw far."

It’s always difficult to compare athletes especially when equipment changes. It happens in tennis, golf and other individual sports. If a tennis player can serve at 100mph with a wooden racket imagine what they would do with graphite.

Can you imagine what it was like being a soldier in ancient times, thinking you are fine because the enemies are horrible archers, but then one of them just throws a sharp stick far enough to shish kabob you.

I remember seeing Uwe Hohn throw when I was a young boy when my Dad took me to watch an athletics meet at Sydney Athletic field. I still remember being totally amazed seeing the Jav seemingly disappear into orbit after it left his hand as we watched from behind. Incredible athlete.

this is insane. everyone who has tried javelin throwing themselves a couple of times, knows how hard it is to even throw it straight forward, or more than 30 meters.. here at this one, just everything was perfect: steps, the own speed, acceleration, angle, arm position, power, release. everything. this is like 10 perfect 180's in Darts in a row.

I couldnt care less about javelin throwing, but I watched every minute of this video. Very interesting and well done! 👍

I remember watching Uwe Hohn on East German children's TV shortly after his world record, where he proceeded to throw an ordinary matchstick in an indoor arena and recorded a distance of over 30 meters. Back then this struck me an an even more impressive achievement.

@2:04 could not have been a more perfect moment. Bruce Jenner holding a javelin and the narrator goes into, "The actual javelin instrument itself changed in overall form." Why yes...yes it did.

The old javelin had some "gliding" abilities that would stabilize it in the air with the tip still almost level when it landed. It would slip through the grass sometimes. The newer javelin impacts at a steeper angle.

2:30 Bruce Jenner and the javelin: I don't know which one went through a more massive change since then.

The fact that he coached Indias first and only gold as well makes him the javelin goat

Fun fact, current wr holder Jan Zelezny, while training for Sydney games, made throw so long it landed behind landing area on training field. It was not measured, but Zelezny himself said, it was perfect throw and it was easily over 100m, no measure though, believe it or not
