So someone finally took the idea of papier-mâché and applied it to construction.

This is an idea from the late 1960’s. The concrete is not standard concrete for building driveways and skyscrapers. It is called ferro cement. It has to be sprayed on and it is mixed with air and becomes strong but lightweight.

It's amazing what a few coats of paint and some furniture can do

It's crazy how many people don't think it's structurally sound just because it looks weird I can tell you the design is very structurally sound and the materials are incredibly strong done in a way where everything is one solid piece and interconnected with rebar

It has more in common with a bomb-proof bunker than an average house

This process has been around for decades. 60s It's called a 'monolithic pour'. You don't need A/C but people put in heated flooring.

So technically, it's not an inflatable home. The home is made using an inflated balloon, but in the end is standing by itself and without the help of air kept inside.
Cool video though. 👍

These houses have been around a very long time and are amazingly strong against hurricanes, tornados, snow & bullets. They're good for hot & cold climates & are termite resistant. I've wanted one for years but sadly can't afford one.

This is so old. Made in the 1950s. Was very popuar for a while back when the "futuristic vibe" was a very trendy aesthetic for ppl. We used to have lots a them in FLA.

I love these dome homes. They are also energy efficient.

It's a monolithic dome. They've been around for a while. One of the most famous was on the SC coast, where a guy was tired of rebuilding after hurricanes. Its aerodynamic so in thirty years in one of the most hurricane hit areas it's had no damage

Forty years ago as a young apprentice l sat eating my lunch as about four pump trucks inflated a pile of layered steel mesh. It kept inflating until the steel meshlocked into shapes. The trucks went away and then they sprayed it with concrete from four directions at once then drove away. A week later they deflated the inside and a .big semitrailer towed the bladder out slowly and that's how the beehive shopping centre was built. The technology has been around for years. Fun fact one of the strongest shapes in nature is a circle so the designs are very strong..why we don't have more of them is a mystery as they are far faster to build and far cheaper that traditional methods.

This reminds me of The Venus Project architecture. If you don't know about it check it out. It's truly stunning and beautiful. If you can look up the book, "The Best That Money Can't Buy", it shows how we can harness technology to house, feed and clothe every human on the planet using automated machines that build housing and automated farms and more. Jaque Fresco, the founder of The Venus Project was a genius. He kept working and designing a new world in which all humans have EVERYTHING they need to live a fulfilling life, and he did this every day until he passed away at over 100 years. Brilliant man. The project still works towards such goals and is located in Venus, Florida.

Looks really interesting. I am wondering how they ran the utilities? Ventilation (maybe through some wild custom windows)? Insulation?

This type of structure can also be made with alternative natural materials. It seems as though it was inspired by earthships or adobe homes but was built with other materials so that it would be faster/more durable? The same effect could be done with earth bags and adobe or cob.. it would just take longer and be more sustainable.

I lived in one of these homes. The mold was insane.
