🐣 Which one are you:
1. I've tried balut and love it
2. I've tried balut and don't like it
3. I haven't tried balut

"These babies need 30 minutes" is too literal

Unpopular opinion: it's okay to be grossed out with something

I'm also a Filipino, but I never really bothered to try balut no matter how many times my friends tried to get me to buy one. It just never appealed to me i guess

Ngl I'm kinda sick of Westerners saying how gross this is because it's just a baby and they like ducks or whatever. Like it's the cruelest thing in the world to boil and eat a duck fetus

But then they go around and eat caviar (fish eggs), veal (baby cow), lamb (baby sheep), boil lobsters and crabs alive, etc.

It looks gross, fine. But so is stuff like ox tongue or blood pudding or haggis or frog legs. Let's not pretend like Asians are the only ones that eat weird things.

Westerners saying this is cruel, but have you seen your meat factories?

It didn't look appetising to me but you look like you really were enjoying it so I'm glad for you and whoever else enjoys it. Always interesting to learn about different foods.

I feel bad just looking at this-
Edit: uh... I'm a vegetarian so it's just harder for me watch it and the extra information that there are feathers n all just does not help. People can eat whatever they want ofcourse.

Honestly I’d try it if it didn’t scare me- I love ducks and I don’t think I could bring myself to eat a baby duck :( but I’d totally try it if it didn’t freak me out

Edit: Dude.. 2.9k cause I said that I didn’t wanna eat a fertilized duck?

balut is one of those things on a (sadly) long long list of hard nos for me, mostly based on textures I physically can't stand. It seems so cool and I like trying foods but my body and brain disagree 😓 . perhaps in another life balut

The majority of these comments calling it disgusting while they still eat meat.

This is also a Vietnamese traditional food. For us Asians, we have extremely similar dishes with maybe a small tweak, and in our own language, we call it something different. It’s just kind of funny and fascinating how this is the one dish we all pronounce the same 😂

These comments are horrendous as hell. “Gross”, “That’s how covid started”, and all that is so disrespectful and kinda hyproctical. How is eating a cooked duck embyro any worse than you eating veal (baby cows), fully grown duck(which has to be k*ll*d), or any other livestock? It so weird you guys only care about eating a certain animals when it is out of the ordinary for your culture.

Edit: 1.)Some of yall are annoying asf. Asian and other minorities get made fun of for their common cultural food that they get embarassed to eat it(Even if it something wellknown like a curry or kimchi). It is fine to say the food does not taste or not your preference, but not okay to drag or disrespect their dishes. 2.) Balut is nothing like cats, nor dogs… it duck which yall eat, but just in embryonic form. It is way more comparable to boiling a lobster alive. Balut is likely eaten because it is so nutirent dense that was very cheap for those who needed that extra calcium and protien.

In Cambodia we eat it with some black pepper salt + lime juice and some herbs. It's so good I can eat it up to 3 sometimes but the downside is I will get one or two pimples the next day.

I feel bad even looking at it. It's definitely not my thing.

You know, at first I was like “ick that’s a baby duck that’s so weird” and then I thought about it…people eat whole ducks all the time. Those ducks grew up and then were killed as adults. So how is it that different or worse if it’s a fetus? So now, I’m just like “huh, interesting”

This is why having an open mind and being willing to change can be a good thing :)

I like to think I’m a fairly adventurous eater, but balut is a hard no for me.

Every time I see someone crack one open it reminds me of my duck, Lenny, and it makes me a bit sad. 😢

I found him soon after he’d hatched and he was too weak and exhausted to keep up with his family, it was getting dark so I took him home and took care of him.

We bonded insanely strongly and he was my best friend and was with me for many years.
Duckies will always hold a special place in my heart.

Btw I meant no disrespect to you Jeanelle, or anyone else who enjoys balut. This is all just my personal reasons I don’t eat it. 😆

In Cambodia 🇰🇭 we normally don’t cook it in water . Here we cook with coconut water add some lemon grass and also lemon . Highly recommend duck egg with pickle garlic
