The Origins and History of Consciousness is an amazing book. Took me 6 years to fully read and digest but it was well worth it. It was life changing and has made me more creative. Then went on to Neumann’s other works: The Great Mother, Fear of the Feminine, and A New Depth Psychology.

Jung split with Freud on the issue of the Oedipal story as the fundamental myth of the human kind and on the issue of the validity of the religious viewpoint. Jung came down heavily on the side of the validity of the religious viewpoint. And he established that in a book called symbols of transformation which was written in 1914. That's the book the produced the permanent split between him and Freud. That books been written three times. He extensively revised it when he was old and rewritten in a sense by one of his students, Eric Neumann. Eric Neumann wrote a few books himself, one of which is called The Origins And History of Consciousness. This book is perhaps the best book as an introduction to Jungian psychology. Jung himself wrote the foreword and said that he wish he himself had written that book. Eric Neumann was able to distill all the volumes of Jung's work and get it across in that book. Because Jung is very difficult to understand, you need to shift your perspective to hear what he's saying.

I love watching him - but he often seems to make things appear more difficult than they really are. Still I enjoy struggling with him when he does.
