How To Rebuild A Differential - Setup Basics, And What You Don't Want To See

Today we're rebuilding a Ford differential under a lifted Jeep. Yeah, I don't know why, either. But the good news is that a lot of this same information applies to axles of all different types. The important concept to grasp is really what things should and shouldn't feel like. So follow along and learn what I look for when I'm assessing and rebuilding a differential.

"There are no mistakes, just happy little accidents" - Bob Ross. Great video as usual.

That was straightforward. Made the job look a lot more doable.

Your timing of videos is so funny to my car troubles I must share this story a month or so ago my 87 Ram chargers drive line exploded while driving down the road. I thought it was the drive line come to find out the rear end came apart. trying to Find gears and things to Rebuild the rear end I Found a used rear axle and put it in after Driving it The Used rear end was howling and making a lot of noise so I bought a new set of gears from rigid axles and Wanted to put in new gears Myself Never doing it before I wasn't a 100% confident doing it and the gears were quite expensive I called many shops and I had a lot of shops that would not do it they weren't trained and did know how to Install gears. I finally found a shop that could do it and they installed the gears and then charged me full rate and gave me the truck back my speedometer was off and the truck drove funny come to find out the gear set that was delivered was wrong the people that installed it knew it was wrong when they installed it but because I supplied them they said that was my fault instead of calling me and asking they even knew The reason it was there was for noisy gears and that I did not want to change the ratio. So then I had to order a new set of gears the correct set and have them installed. my $2000 toy 87 Ram charger just cost me $2300 for the rear end I should of done it myself

Great video! I've never wrenched on a differential. Scared of 'em.

Even though it was a Ford, still interesting. All good to know. Just found a Studebaker in my local old car yard.and it was mostly there.

You have good taste in tools (the brand name and the cobbled together varieties).

I just picked up 96 bronco that will need a new ring and pinion. Watching some other videos that were super in depth made the job seem very intimidating, watching this makes it seem much better to do 😊

Great job ! I can't wait for the 8-3/4 sure grip sequel. I need to change the gears on my challenger. I think when I do that I'm gonna do a disc brake conversion too.

should look at the diff cover video that Gayle Banks did and heat tells how the pinion is oiled

Geezo! I missed this video the other day somehow! I blame it on my stupid finger. I rebuilt my Dana 60 with a Richmond kit. The supplied yellow goop would not produce a good reading. I used white spray paint, and it worked great! I'm amazed that neither of you spurted any blood! Good job you guys! And remember... if you can't laugh at yourself, I will do it for you! Well that wasn't as bad to do as I thought it was going to be!

When you do the 8 3/4 video, can you make sure to include details about the 489 case? Fixing to have to rebuild one i just bought. Thanks!

What causes the backlash-like clunk from both axles (sometimes solo, sometimes both) but it’s not from incorrect backlash? Driving me nuts …only happens when accelerating or decelerating / weight shift on axles, and everything looks damn near new. Can Incorrect preload with adjustables on carrier cause that?
