Word of advice. If the engine is boosted and it has this noise when its cold go easy on it. Otherwise you send the piston out of the chat room like I did.

It's normal for forged aluminum pistons to slap a bit on cold start

Thanks for mentioning the fast slap speed. It's as fast as piston pin noise
And less fast than an engine knock

Forged pistons always slap on cold start specially built engine with wide clearance.. prime your engine before start up (starter bumps) do the trick for my car 😅

Piston's lap is created by any number of things. Could be engineering, could be manufacturing. Oiling Is it one of them.

Here’s one for you….is it possible for piston slap to happen to a new engine with sufficient oil levels ?

Say the oil is thicker than most brands, could the delay in oil reaching the pistons cause piston slap ?

Looks like you're holding a Hyundai/Kia 2.0L Nu piston. I just bought a 2023 Kia Soul LX, they only come with the 2.0L Nu engine now, at least for the United States market. I changed out the factory fill after the break in period, around 1500 miles, I don't know what kind of oil they use just to get them out the door at the assembly line, although my understanding is break in oil is very high in zinc, I have always used Mobil1 in all my cars with no problems. When I start the engine from a dead cold start, it's actually very quite, as it warms up and the idle comes down after about 8 seconds after turning the key, the rattle begins and it is a very distinct rattle sound, as the engine hits op temp, the rattle is still there but sounds more "organized" I guess you can say and resembles the high compression rattle of like a VW diesel engine in a car is the best way I can describe it. The compression ratio on these is on the high side, 12.5:1, I run 93 octane for the little bit of extra power you get with that higher octane. To my ears the rattle is coming right from the top of the engine, but you never know unless you use one of those automotive stethoscopes. Can't tell if it's piston slap. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Mines been getting worse and worse over the past 6ish months and only very recently it got into the garage and is being repaired under warranty, just started as a startup rattle….then it started lasting longer…and longer and now it lasts for a good 15minutes after pulling off. Does this sound like piston slap to you?

Unless you have a gm 3.4 sfi like mine it’s normal when the engine is cold

So my 4wheeler has a little bit of slap starting. Should it be repaired right away or just let her blow and rebuild it?

Would it be possible to hear this on a new engine.

I have a near new Triumph motorcycle a noise like piston am in contact with lots of others with the same problem.

But we only hear it start about 30secs after engine it starts gentle and gets louder then gets gentle again and goes some 3 mins later.

Doe that sound like Piston Slap Sir?
