In the old days, we used very long screwdrivers with wooden handles. We took the metal end and placed it in various places on the engine and put our ear to the wooden handle side. Based on where we heard the worst noise is where we started our looking. Today, you have all of these wonderful tools to help troubleshoot your engines. It's fascinating to watch you guys do it differently!

heres a old hot rodder trick: take the plug wires off each cylinder at a time. if it stops knocking, its probably a rod knock, and its on THAT cylinder.

Been there, done that, swapped the engine. First car, a 61 Dodge Lancer. I worked on it for free to help out the lady who owned it when I was 15 & 16. She ran it out of oil and the engine seized. She got a ride home took out the title and gave it to me as thanks for keeping it running as long as it did. I went to it, threw in 3 quarts of oil and drove it home. The bearings were toast. I put in new bearings from the bottom but the crank was flat spotted. Drove it with a quart of motorhoney in it for a few months then my Uncle and I swapped the 170CI for a junk yard 225 CI truck engine. Cheaper than rebuilding the original engine. Didn't quite fit so I lost the heater. Drove it for 3 to 4 years and sold it for $500 in 73. I kind of wish I could find one now for nostalgia. That car taught me so much about wrenching. Late in life became an aircraft mechanic.

Seeing how the crankshaft and bearings interact from underneath may be the single most enlightening scene in all of car YouTube. I could never visualize how those pieces worked until just now.

I teach mechanics at a college in the UK... I'll be using this video in my lessons to visually explain and let them hear what worn out big end bearings sound/look like. Cheers Zac!

My car sounded JUST like that. It was a balancing weight on the torque converter that Un-welded itself and was hitting the trans bell housing.

Came back to watch this again celebrating the revival of my n54 135i.
Had my engine spin a bearing or 2 around the time this video released and it took a few months to find a new engine and a place to swap the engine in.
My car comes back this week and I couldnt be happier.
