Hearing Cantonese makes me smile. My first friend when I was 5/6 years old was 3/4 Chinese 1/4 Japanese. She lived 4 doors down & they owned a Chinese laundry.   It was like a 2nd home to me. Her father always had Chinese opera on the radio. We were in each others homes all the time for several years until they moved. I never learned a word but somehow knew what her parents were saying. I swear I am wired for Chinese & can't wait to learn it formally.  More videos please!

Greetings from Hong Kong, it's funny that a Cantonese speaker watch this video. One suggestion that please use traditional Chinese. Some of the Chinese characters used in this video are Simplified Chinese.

I am fascinated that Cantonese has up, down and neutral tones in the high, middle and low registers.  It seems that it would be very hard to keep track of the tones, even while trying to master the pronunciation.

I have two favorite slangs I like to share: 1.) "sik woon mein, fan woon dai" - eat the bowl of noodle, then flip that bowl over upside down after. It literally mean how you repaid a person with betrayal when he/she did you a favor or something nice. 2.) "ng kin koon choy, ng lau an lui" - you will not cry until you see the coffin. This applied when a person wanting to try something that he/she thinks is fun, exciting, or entertaining, but ended up regretting later after experiencing total suffering and only wish not have done it in the first place.

I enjoyed Carmen's slang choices. "Gaau gaau jan, m bong chan" reminds me of "jaai tai" (literally, vegetarian dish look), which is used for looking but not buying anything. Her "m ngaam key" reminds me of "m go din" (literally, no electricity), which I use when there's no attraction between a man and woman. One that always cracks me up is "jau gai" (literally, the chicken ran away), which means to lose out on something or miss an opportunity. Ho gaau siu!

Once we had six classmates forgetting to bring Chinese Homework and we sort of named them 搞，搞，震，冇，幫 and 襯. Haha that was really funny

Here's some that I use:  喊包 haam3 baau1 means cry-baby (literally cry bun) / lau gaai hau (not sure of the characters) means whiny mouth - we say these to my daughter if she's acting up.    火龍  fo2 lung4 (literally fire dragon) means a traffic jam ahead of you - a long line of red (this is taxi driver slang).     嗰條木嘴 go2 tiu4*2 muk6 jeui2 (literally that wooden mouth person) means that idiot.  We use this jokingly in our family to describe ourselves when posing for pictures (I also nicknamed the Three Guys super market in Brooklyn  三條木嘴).
