Breville BOV650XL toaster oven .
Thermostat part number SP0010487

Toaster oven would power on, and controls worked, but would not heat up. Heating elements and thermal fuse all tested good. Thermostat was replaced and the unit started working.

In case you-all do not scroll down to see GreatDad's note below. I tried his insanely easy fix of just cleaning the thermostat (see video - no disassembly required). It _can't_ have worked, yet...it worked!!

Thanks for this and for pointing out the location of the thermostat. I took a dry paper towel and wiped the surface of the thermostat. Voila, that familiar buzzing sound! I don't know if this fix will last, but at least I'll get one more sandwich out of it.

5:42 the three screws - by all means remove the feet from the unit but just right of the bottom right screw there is a drill hole and a screw down the hole that is the screw you remove free the control unit that allows you to take the lid completely off. No need to have a long screw driver as you mention much earlier in this video. Just take the feet off and that one screw to free the controller.

Thanks for the tips. I have had this unit 9 years and use it multiple times a day. I cleaned the thermostat face in the back rear right side. Viola! She be working.

I had the same problem. There doesn't seem to be replacement temp sensors available anymore for this model. I was about to toss the whole toaster but i tried putting the sensor back in again-- works fine! Its been a few weeks now with no problems.

Should be possible to check resistance of the thermostat. It's like a simply thermistor (similar to what is used in 3d printers). Resistance should be more than 0 (shorted) but less than infinity (open circuit).

This rules! Thank you for doing such a thorough testing instead of just hucking it in the trash. This is very inspiring!

I’m surprised there is no insulation in there

They were not put together by robot, they were put together by human who make 99 cents and an hour.

These are great ovens, I'm in the process of troubleshooting now, thanks so much for this video

Great informative video. I was able to get those 5 black screws off with a smaller screwdriver, just enough finger strength, and cut risk. FWIW, HEATER_N spade was burnt out on my Breville's power PCB. New ones are $50 with shipping and currently back-ordered so after 7 years might have to just throw it in the landfill.

What if it turns on, but the turning the buttons don't work and pressing the start button doesnt work.

I just cleaned my thermostat and now it’s heating up again. Try that first; it’s the quickest fix and hopefully it solves your heating problem.

YEP! Perfect fix . . . easiest appliance problem I have ever encountered! However . . . having put a flashlight on it revealed a mess of grease on the inside panels and element guards (been cooking for over 10+ years). Going to have to take it all apart to clean them . . . Project for another day . . . on with the toast :)

A good slap on the right side (machine's left side) resonates in a way that triggers the heating circuit. It's been working for years, but I'm at a point now where I'd rather get a replacement part.

I had the same problem with my Breville model BOV650 purchased new in Oct 2021. Watched this video all the way thru then read all of the comments. I learned by reading the comments maybe all you need to do is wipe the thermostat clean. It's located top right inside of the oven, I wiped it with a clean cloth and now it works. THANKS!

oh wow! i wish i watched this video before i brought my breville to the dump. ☹️ maybe the thermostat just needed a wipe down!

I had it a long time though and was worried it could be a fire hazard if it were to malfunction.

Spent all the time explaining how to open the darn thing open rather than how to fix the problem

So helpful! This literally just happened to ours. The manual is zero help (not surprised) so going to attempt your fixes 🙏

thanks for this! no need to remove the back cover to get to the thermostat. paper towel wipe down of the thermostat did the trick.
