Great tip Streaky I started using multiple limiters recently on my masters and like you said it's much easier to get a loud master and still keep the dynamics.

Great tips, keep them coming. You just confirmed my thought on when track is gain staged from -18db loses something, punch or what ever.. Always felt like thats the reason.

It's true that limiting just like compressing puts a certain extra element to the mix that I like, but as everything in audio, how much loudness I put in every song varies. Some requiere a lot of gain reduction for that, some almost nothing.

Thanks Streaky! sometimes i just want to learn about Mastering and loudness and i have found away to get most mixes as loud a -6, -8 DB LUFS with using 4 limiters and without much distortion and in between i use some transformer emulation plugins and some outboard gear to get more level without distortion. So yea i also cant get -6DB LUFS with just 1 limiter, but i am just an Amateur mixing Engineer and have no Audio schooling at all, funny that i can get those silly levels like you describe, so maybe the way i gain stage is not that bad after all hahahaha. Cheers.

A parallel EQ/COMP chain is another way to get some extra level though quite a bit more expensive hardware wise to setup.

Can you review the JBL Lsr speaker series?

It took me a lot of trial and error to figure it out. Spot on!

When using multiple limiters, would you still keep the attack and release settings similar on each?

For the last few years I’ve mainly used Izotope Ozone but lately my favorite is Kazrog Kclip 3 which does limiting through saturation and a Neve Portico II MBP which does limiting, compression and saturation. Have both the Neve and Kazrog has gotten the best results for me. I recently got the Chandler Zener Limiter UAD plug-in but haven’t played with it yet.

Excellent tip. Thanks!
I use mainly Fabfilter, UAD and Waves stuff

a little goes a long way. I use izotope vintage limiter

With that many limiters used in a single mastering chain what does your chain look like? ie. Do you spread out the limiters in the chain or use them in succession?

I'm glad you've brought this up, Streaky. I think you or someone has mentioned it before, because it's what I do. One question though, is how much do you use per limiter and do you try to graduate up or down (ie less or more limiting on first, then a bit more or less on second, etc.) until you get up to where do you want the final level?

Hey Streaky, I like the fact that you're the only sound engineer who is honest and talk about this topic on the internet, because everyone is fake when they talk about loudness, the thing I would like to know about the way you handle gain staging is if you make it on steam master ( like using a limiter in groups and the last one on the master) or if you make it with stereo master and you set different limiter settings in the master chain

PS: I use Ozone Maximizer in the end of my master chain, and also I like to use stealth limiter by IK Muktimedia

Louder isn’t better. Save ur ears. Listen to music at lower volumes. It sounds better too.

I get my masters as loud as -5 and -4 LUFS with ozone 5 and fabfilter pro L2
