Tamagotchis!

I HAVE 3 TAMAGOTCHIS AND THEY STILL WORK WHEN YOU REPLACE THE BATTERIES.

One of my favorite memories was having a couple of these when I was about 14. My 100-year-old great-grandma asked what I was playing with so I showed her.

I explained how it worked and within minutes she was laughing and saying in her German accent, “oh, look at the little poop!” And “how do I feed it, darling? It’s wanting its food!”

She thought it was so funny and talked about what delightful toys we had “nowadays” (1998-ish). She said she wished she could “learn the computer” but it was too complex and she was too deaf to be instructed.

We sat side-by-side playing with that GigaPet and talking for a long time.

She died a month or two later.

Every once in a while I’ll be using my iPad or phone and wonder what she would have thought of something like that. If she would have “learned the computer” if she could have had that.

I hope that memory always reminds me to stay interested in the next generations toys and tech and delight in it rather than complain about it.
