I bought a couple of the old Tamagotchis for the same reasons you described. That crippling realisation that life kinda sucks and it’s only going to get worse. Those old bleeps are so recognisable I forgot to silence it at work and when it went off demanding tribute someone went “omg is that a tamagotchi?!” 😂

I love tamagotchi so much! I've been collecting them since 2018 and now I own over 60+ ranging from the very first one from the 90's to the newest Tamagotchi Uni.

I never had a Tamagotchi, but I did get a Digimon as a kid. Later I got a Gigapet dog. Digimon was by far my favorite. Raising a dinosaur was the coolest.

I remember seeing a huge steel bin full of tamagotchis for $1 each at the end of the hype. Already had one but still bought a few. Just found a nib white/grey one when i moved. Pulled the battery tab out and it started right up :]

Awesome run through the history; I immediately thought of Digimon and you reminded me about the original, the TV show which I adored (and movies), then the Digimon devices. That Pokemon Pikachu with the step counter was incredible to me at the time, and I spent many hours shaking that thing to earn xp! 😂

My brother bought me a Gen 1 Tamagotchi for Christmas as a joke present (slightly more basic to the "Connect Tamgitchis" me and my friends played with back in the 2000s). Now whenever I have a second (e.g., waiting for the kettle to boil) I'm feeding or playing with my "pet alien" to keep it from being hungry or unhappy. And having had this toy for two days now, I can testify that the final point you make, "The Parallel To Mobile Phones", is spot on! I was checking my social media on my phone every time I had a few minutes but after deleting social media earlier this year and having now received a Tamagotchi, I'm instead filling up those moments of free time with keeping my Tamagotchi alive!

The name actually comes from the words "tamago" and "tomodachi" which mean egg and friend so they're basically egg friend

I love Tamagotchi since 2000s until now I have Tamagotchi Uni which is the first Wifi feature!
