Garter Snakes are some of the best pet snakes in my opinion. In this video I will give the top 10 reasons I think garter snakes are among the best pet snakes. The genus Thamnophis should be more popular as pet snakes!

Absolutely wonderful video. Garters need more love. 🐍 They are such wonderful and unique snakes that are overlooked in the hobby. The only problem with this video is that it isn’t an hour long and showcasing every locality and morph that exists in garter snakes. 😉

Years back my father rescued a garter snake that was dehydrated and dying on his job site. We brought it back home and it became one of our pets for a good 4 years. It was one of the sweetest and most responsive, snakes I had ever handled. Never bit, was always alert and would eventually get cozy and rest wrapped around your fingers. I’ll definitely be buying one once I move out of my parent’s house. Such cute and amazing little creatures.

Been doing herps for 35 years, never can forget when I saw one of these chasing a fish with its mouth open lol, much different from the boas and pythons i grew up with.

i saved a wild one (someone was going to kill it so i took it) . we were friends for a few days, I was debating on keeping it as a pet . it did get kinda friendly those few days and liked watching me. i decided to set it free though, i kinda miss it though.

Dream snake!

I fell in love with these the first time I saw a hatchling in the wild- when I was just a hatchling, myself.

I found out just recently that you can keep them as pets, and that's what sparked my current interest in reptiles! The garter snake community tank of my dreams won't happen for a few more years yet, but for now, I'll live vicariously through videos like yours.

Thank you!

I love how curious they are! Mine always poke their heads out if they hear someone walk in the room. ☺️

Ruby is so big! I didn't realize they get to such a great size! I love that they form social bonds; it seems to follow that they would be more personable with us hairless apes ;)

I absolutely love the variety in garter snakes, really want to keep some in the future! I do wish there was more content online in general about the specific care for different species though; because most care guides are outdated and or don't specify the species or subspecies.

So on the note of red wigglers making them sick, should outdoor worm bins be snake proofed to protect the snakes??

I had been enjoying your channel and the collabs you've done about your isopods and suddenly a video about garters pops up and answers all the questions I have had about starting a garter community. Thank you!

I had one as a pet when I was in my teens. It was super friendly, would hang out on my shoulders as I walked around. Never bit anyone, didn’t even know they could musk. As you mentioned he would crawl up onto me not looking for food just looking to explore. Was a cool little animal friend.

Garters - and Aquarimax Pets - were mentioned last night as an underrated reptile during the Supreme Gecko livestream. :)

Gorgeous garters! I just got a snake today, not a garter, since where I live unfortunately there are no garters found in captivity or in the wild. Very hard to find here in Indonesia. But I did get a C. flavolineatus, a baby, and it does somehow remind me of garters. Both garters and flavolineatus or basically every snake is beautiful to me! Great video!

I needed something to do with these crazy breeding endlers. Guess a bio active enclosure with a small pond would be amazing. I've been considering a snake for my kids. Thanks for sharing

Thank you. We are looking into getting our first pet snake. And this helped out a lot. Do you by chance have more in depth videos on tank setup? And how to maintain the environment for them?

I heard in a video, but have not yet looked (I literally just heard it in a silly podcast today) that eating garter snakes is bad, as they are poisonous/toxic.
Can you confirm?
I held a snake for the first time yesterday. It haha.
