The trunk of the 1956 Plymouth Savoy was full of rust, tar, bronzed patch panels and pinholes so we decided to weld in multiple patch panels. Now we're going to show how to finish the trunk repair to a show car finish using rocker guard, seam sealer, and speckled trunk paint.

*** Our 1956 Plymouth Savoy needs some TLC aka rust repair. This series of videos will show what to do when your classic car has rust issues ***

Chad…just a question….the underside of the new metal hasn’t been treated….how do you keep water from going through the pinholes and rusting the underside of the new metal?…btw…it looks good from the top!

Chad I went to a vocalization school, in the 70s, , you would be a great teacher, , hell you are, , teaching every move you make, , you are a incredible teacher, , of body work and making something out of nothing, , but what you see in your mind, ,

I must admit that is a good driver trunk. All my cars are drivers so I get it. In the end the trunk came out fantastic. This may be one of the best tutorials you have done! (as for practical info anyone can do)

Really like the job on the trunk but two questions, Chad. (1) Why not use the seam-sealer before you spray the initial coat of rock guard, then spray on top of that? (2) You put patch panels over pin holes in the factory trunk steel, then sealed the seams above... What will keep water from migrating through the pin holes below and rusting out the body underneath the new patch panels. How do you keep that from occurring?

'56 Plymouth Savoy sedan has never been a really in-demand car. But they do have that wonderful '50s charm still. At a low cost. For this one to stand out - it needs a bright & cheerful 2 tone paint color change. resale-red with white would be good. With matching interior. Still would not be a big-buck car, so would need to be done on a budget, or would end up where you'd be better off just buying a finished one.

That turned out really well! I might have misunderstood but it sounds like you said you patched right over the rusty metal. I think i would have cut it out and seam sealed underneath as well. But overall this will be fine for what it is!

Wow! The trunk looks awesome. You could not tell it had 6 or 7 patches done to it afterwards. Great work Chad and Jolene. Doug did an awesome job getting it cleaned out and prepped. Awesome video!!

Being a BIG fan of "tidy" trunks, I must admit I was a bit skeptical.... but this turned out pretty nice!

Just because it is a driver doesn't mean it shouldn't be fixed properly ... this is a patch n cover.... what will the next owner think of it? What would Chad say about it if it wasn't his work?

Chad an add on trigger adapter for long spraying will save your fingers and thumbs, , I spray more paint than a painter in a Tijuana body shop

I missed a wee bit I understand the concept of what you did but won't it sweet between the two layers causing rust to run wild ?

Well that is a new product for me, trunk paint. It did a fantabulous job. I'll file this technique under 'better than useful'.
