A Brief History Of The Man Who Brainwashed America: Edward Bernays

While no single man can take full credit for the rise of American advertising, Edward Bernays certainly deserves more than most.
Known today as “the father of public relations”, Bernays was responsible for campaigns that changed the lives and minds of the American citizen forever: having a hand in everything from political leaders, to smoking culture and what Americans ate for their breakfast. His infamous book Propaganda gave rise to the many rules and regulations of public relations.

dude being known as the father of modern PR is probably the best PR he ever pulled off. he should be known as the father of modern psychosocial manipulation 🤔🤷

Bernays was indeed "a pioneer and a brainwasher." Instead of educating the masses, he was content to manipulate them. One of the jackals of history.

I saw a marketing guy 50 yo say that to sell to women, you must always promote it as something men are keeping away from you. The interviewer was aghast

Bernays is terrifying. Everyone should know about him, because what he's started has only increased in intensity.

"The engineering of consent." Lord be merciful, that's one of the most evil things I've ever heard.

A good example of how one person can have such a negative impact on humanity.

what does it say about a society that a man such as Bernays is widely revered as a pioneer, instead of the scoundrel and villain that he truly was.

Nobody does it better than Big Pharma.
"Hey doc, I just saw a sexy commercial for a purple pill. Think I should try it?"
"They're not paying me to say no."

I’m glad this guy is getting some exposure. Learning about his work and life tends to wake people out of their brainwashed stupor.

I think this is spot on, I think it glosses over the impact that "Public Relations" has had on the world. Today we call them influencers.

Just think about how the advertising industry persuaded women, including unfortunately, my mother, to take up smoking, get addicted and make it sound so glamorous, as I think some ads referred to cigarettes, as “torches of freedom, “ if memory serves.

As for mom, she died at 53 after suffering in horrible pain for years as cancer racked her body.

It was better for my dad, but he still suffered tremendously after decades of heavy smoking, although he lived his last 20 years with just one lung.

Seems a fair summation of the man who sowed the early seeds of the highly sophisticated systems of persuasion we now endure.

Bernays lived 103 years. The good die young.

The only way you could do evil at a mass scale is by believing your doing good.
