Can we appreciate that Sofia Coppola can direct

By the time filming was done, she was probably saying to herself the famous Hollywood line: "What I really want to do is direct." Incidentally, Lost in Translation is one of my favorite movies ever.

I mean her physical acting isn’t bad, and she certainly looks the part. But good lord, that flat vocal delivery.

She was great. She speaks slowly which is her natural way. She couldn’t help the monotone as she had no training and her father pushed her into this acting venture in a movie before she was ready.
She’s now a great director/film maker and always a beauty! ❤

Can’t believe critics called her ugly. 😮

She was absolutely Gorgeous!! Loved her performance. Cried when she died because my family dealt with similar loss and she reminded me of my late sister

The spechless al pacino's cry out when she was murdered Is a brutal scene... It sums up all the pain, all the sorrow...AND all the pacino's chops

I think Siri has a more emotional delivery than Sofia in this movie.
I’m glad she became a talented writer and director because those are her strengths.

Even though Andy Garcia isn’t Italian in any way, I’m proud that he played Italians all the time. He’s so good looking

One of the saddest stories in cinema. I cried when she was murdered.

I do not see there that Sofía Coppola's performance deserves the avalanche of criticism that it brought at the time, quite the opposite. She herself made it clear that being an actress was not her desire at all. To my understanding, she played the role of a young and innocent girl, with high education and respect for family tradition, still oblivious to the machinations of her mafia family. Her ignorance or lack of knowledge of the world in which her relatives operate makes her pure soul. She is a timeless, atypical and iconic beauty, which shows her character to be healthily captivating and the young age of both the actress and the character justifies her inexperience, perhaps, and that definitely works in her favor! Everything is calculated in Mary Corleone's performance, right down to her blatant challenge to her father (the basket scene), her half-conscious expression of reality ("you are using me to pull the strings" in the attic), her immature whimsy on the stairs that will lead to her death... Perfect performance and tragic unfair ending.

People talk so much ish about her and her performance but I LOVED her as Mary. She was so unique and unexpected, instead of the trite leading ladies of the time. She was so young, but was so natural, and believable. I think she conveyed so much believable emotion for her age and lent an authenticity to the performance with her youth and purity.

Her acting isn't terrible in this, but I'm glad she chose to pursue directing instead. She has a real affinity for it!

Hearing her talk all I can think of is “the room” by Tommy Wiseau

Awww she did her best! She was so young in this movie

I'd never noticed that she was listening to Elvis Costello in that bedroom scene. Given Sofia's love of late 70s new wave / postpunk (as reflected in her soundtrack choices) that's a nice little view of what's to come

Sophia is very young and innocent here. I liked seeing her in this role. Americans are hyper critical and narrow minded about talent. She was celebrated throughout Europe.

I dont get the criticism of her.. she seems a lot like the rich Italian girls I’ve come across in my life. She seemed very authentic. I think the fact that she was pretty but not a bombshell added to the credibility/realism.
