"Your sins are terrible. It is just that you suffer."

What a cold ass line tbh.

Although I didn't really like the third film in the Godfather trilogy I did find this scene to be incredibly moving. It is not overplayed nor under it is just right. The level of emotion is just right for Michael's confession as it is the only way a man like him can express his grief. He is still angry and hurt by Fredo's betrayal but still knows he did wrong by ordering the death of his father's son.

The part I love so much in this scene is Michael was under the comfort of a genuinely good man! Even though he's at the tail end of his life, he refers to Michael as his "son" and cares about the well being of his soul.

When Michael starts to confess, he confesses as Michael the Don. But as soon as he mentions Fredo, we see a small glimpse of who Michael used to be for the first time in decades (both literally and within the scope of the trilogy).

Mentioning killing the son of his parents caused him to weep like a little boy. He loved his brother. He loved his mom. He loved his dad. Knowing he betrayed all 3 by ordering that hit was the 2nd biggest regret of his life...following the eventual death of his daughter, arguably his greatest love.

While everyone here in the comment section are either commenting about the performance of Al Pacino or how sad this scene is.
But here I am, just impressed by how quick the servant comes up with a whole plate of snacks completed with drinks, 5 stars yelp reviews for Vatican.

I'm not Catholic, or Anglican or even a Christian, but I credit the solemn duty and sweet words of Cardinal Lamberto as being one of my inspirations for going into ministry and pursuing religion.

It's a wonderful scene, to see Michael so vulnerable after all those years. Especially, for Mike to carry the burden of ordering the death of his older brother Fredo

I see him saying my mothers son as his way of admitting that he's not deserving of being his brother for what he did

This is my favorite scene in all of the "godfather" movies. Very moving. Brings me to tears. Especially when Michael Corleone is bowed over saying "I killed my mother's son."

You can't help but tear up as he goes through his diabetic attack eating the candy uncontrollably and drinking the juice "when I'm under stress sometimes this happens"

The best scene in a "failed" movie. Michael finally realizes the damage he has caused to others and himself.

1:12 I'm always amazed how fast the guy prepares that tray

Just noticed the church bell tolling in the background. Brought to mind - intentionally, of course - the murder-filled baptism ceremony in Part 1 when Michael would have lost his soul. A beautiful reversal here where his soul is supposed to be redeemed.

He says whats the point of confessing if you dont feel repent and after he confesses he starts crying, great contradiction, perfect play

"Would you like to make a confession?"

" it's been 30 years I would use up too much of your time." 😅🤣

One of the very few scenes in III worthy of the first two.

I was in high school when I first saw this movie with my dad. I just saw this scene today again and could not help but tear up. An absolute legend.

One of the very best scenes in the whole trilogy, as I’m sure I’m not the only one who cried. You could literally feel the weight on that one great sin Michael committed being released, all the lying he had to do and he was carrying it for so long.
I’m sure Marlon would be proud.

Michael hunched his back at times in the first movie - particularly BEFORE he was formally inducted into the family business. The man Michael used to be can be seen here, especially during his inflection at the end.

Lovely scene
