She Remembers The Pitiful Hate Of White People In Virginia

What can I say but my God what a magnificent person - Wise and kind and deep–and a great storyteller. She grew up at a time when Virginia closed all the public schools after the Supreme Court Brown vs. Board of Education decision. When she refers to the school she is referring to the public school she attended which was shut down for years. She is an ordinary citizen selected to tell her stories for my 1990 TV series, Making Sense of the Sixties. I never forgot her and the beautiful, thoughtful way she presents her memories. I maintain the privacy of everyone I interviewed back in 1989 and do not release any names without their permission.

This lady has a wonderful speaking voice I can listen to her all day. I feel she would have done well in voiceover work especially reading books onto tapes. Thanks again David.

Well spoken woman with factual knowledge of those years. I knew it was wrong as a child being raised in white society. Being raised in a house of bigotry, I have fought against it my entire life. We still have work to do.

When I was little, I remember being at the movies and causing a ruckus. I was sent up to be watched by the people in the Balcony, who were black It was the only place then that give any relief from the heat of summer. They were really patient with having to keep an eye on me. I am 70 years old and feel so much shame at that memory . I
was a child that had no home life even at that young age, but they were so kind to a skinny dirty little white girl.Thank-you. I am an 11th generation Virginian, and ask for forgiveness for my ancestors.

What a beautiful lady inside and out with such grace and dignity. This is a part of America history that should never be forgotten.

Prince Edward County, Virginia, Closes Schools Rather Than Integrate ordered to integrate its schools under Brown v. Board of Education, Prince Edward County, Virginia, chose instead to close all public schools on May 1, 1959, They remained closed until 1964, when the Supreme Court ordered the county to open them, in Griffin v. County School Board of Prince Edward County, on May 25, 1964.

I love her mentioning the kind looks people would give her (on the bus)- at least she knew not everyone had hate & evil in their hearts. It also speaks to the depth & power of the animosity that it forced decency to be silenced.

Excellent questioning to prompt & capture that.

I grew up in Richlands Virginia, it’s still incredibly racist in the rural areas.

She is beautiful, amazing and measured despite the childhood trauma (still palpable) she experienced from racism, segregation and discrimination. The form changes, but the reality of it remains.

Most impressive.
He just sets up the camera.
Turns it on
and gives her full control of her own narrative.
And she is like:
"Ok, well in that case,
take a seat, and allow me to tell you what it really was like..."
My mom grew up in Mississippi back in those times.
And she always told her sons, you can watch all the documentaries on TV about the civil rights era, but
unless you were alive down south during that time and experienced it for yourself,
You have no idea what it really was like!

We moved to the central coast of California in the early 70’s. I got called every racial slur under the sun between Kindergarten and the 8th grade. Times were different back then. The teachers did or said nothing about it to the kids doing it. Almost everyone one of those kids who demonstrated that behavior failed in their adult life. It would be safe to safe that about 95% are living just about the poverty level. I think that proves it had a lot to do with the lack of intelligence. However, I never used as an excuse to stop my personal growth. I live by the motto, “No Excuses, Just Results!” Failure is not an option in my world.

It is sad how many young people today are not being taught that this stuff really happened. A huge tragedy

I recall a time when I visited some relatives of my mother in the Jim Crow South. This was in the early 1960s.The sign on the front door of this business establishment said. "All N words and dogs go to the back. But this first thing I saw was a White man bring his two dogs into the store through the front. Needless to say I was told that Black people did not go into that particular store. Whether through the front or the back. And this was the point of the sign. These people did not want Black people to patronize the store. I asked an elder why.The elder said the White family who ran the store did not want to take "Blood" money. I didn't understand. The elder said these people believed that all Black people were the cursed descendants of Cain. There was nothing Black people could do to have such a terrible sign removed. The core power structures of law enforcement, judges and elected officials at that time didn't see a problem with it.I really couldn't understand why these relatives decided to stay in this small town.
