Discovering Padme had arrived with his former master, Obi-Wan Kenobi, the fragment of a recording in the memory bank of a midwife droid forever changed Vader’s perception. Watching his wife’s final moments, he heard her proclaim her unwavering belief in the goodness that still resided within Anakin. Realizing his master had manipulated and deceived him about his wife’s fate for decades, Vader plunged into an abyss of grief and turmoil. Returning to Coruscant, Sidious sensed a shift in his apprentice’s emotions, imparting yet another lesson to teach Vader what it truly meant to embrace the dark side as a Sith.

And on top of that revelation Palpatine really thought he could roast Luke to death right in front of his father whom he had deceived all those years - and get away with it. This guy had some nerve.

this puts into perspective his genuine offering to Luke to overthrow the emperor and rule as Father and Son. Imagine if he had then say, let's restore balance together. But I guess it was still too early for that seed to have sprouted properly in his heart

By the time of Return of the Jedi Vader was more than willing to turn against Palpatine. Not necessarily to return to the light but to destroy the man who had deceived him all these years. Luke's faith in the light side was the catalyst for Anakin's return to the light.

In ROTJ Vader became more sympathetic toward his troops, rather than punishing them.

You can see how much character development he started to have later in the Original Trilogy.

I absolutely love the Vader comics.
They add so much to his character arc and makes his later redemption so much more powerful.

Palpatine: “As if some dark lord maliciously programmed a malpractice droid to negligently let Padme die while making stupid excuses.”

Palpatine: “Some other dark lord. That’s not me. Yes.”

If the medical droid had shown the complete footage of Padme's final moments, Vader would've already known about Leia being his daughter and Luke's twin sister long before their final duel in Return of the Jedi.

I wish that in return of the Jedi, when dying, Vader would have told Luke something about how he wished Luke and leia could have known their mother. How strong and beautiful and caring she was . But of course Lucas wasn’t thinking of prequels at the time.
