CSS Hunley - the Civil War Submarine - Forgotten History

The dream of men traveling underwater has been one of fascination. Leonardo Da Vinci imagined the submarine in his drawings. During THE American Revolution American inventor David Bushnell created his “Turtle” a single manned crank driven submersible. But during the American Civil war, there was an invention that was the true precursor to the modern submarine, and it was the first used in combat and the first to sink a ship. Hosted by Colin D. Heaton. Forgotten History is a 10th Legion Pictures Production.

One has to admire the courage and grit required to man such a vessel.

The Hunley was not the first to engage an enemy ship in combat, although it was the first to sink an enemy ship in combat. In 1776, David Bushnell's Turtle, operated by Ezra Lee, attacked the HMS Eagle in an attempt to drive the British from the harbor, but was unable to penetrate the copper plating on the hull. So, he released the explosive mine, which detonated in the harbor with a huge roar. The explosion was so great it alarmed the British, who evacuated the harbor, giving Bushnell the victory he had sought (even though he didn't actually sink the British ship).

I don’t live far from the Hunley’s replica. It’s truly a fascinating piece of naval history.

From the CSS Hunley, modern Nuclear powered submarines are now the greatest ocean going predators the world has ever seen. I don't think the Hunley's crew ever knew how they were going to change the history of Naval warfare. But I hope they can all now rest in peace.

It's so fascinating how our civil war had so many firsts in war. It truly was the first modern war. Hunley is just one of many examples.

I was living in South Carolina at the time when the Hunley was discovered and I got the honor of seeing the the sub in person after they salvaged the vessel. A friend of my father was working on the salvage team that brought it to the surface.

What is really sad is that the burial and memorial of this brave crew could not have taken place in the racist, woke environment that exists today. I hope this piece of history can be preserved before the ignorant racists destroy it.

Respect for real heroism, no matter what "nation" it pertains to, should be observed. Excellent lecture Colin👍👍👍

Thank you for a very interesting talk. The men who were willing to sacrifice themselves in these submarines were quite brave. I am glad that they were given the respect to be buried as the heros they were.

I have always been fascinated by the Hunley. The fact that the Confederates had this experimental vessel that had already killed two crews through pure terrible design and sent it into battle anyway - with volunteers - says there’s much about the mindset of the people who fought that war that I will never understand.

Born and raised in Charleston. Went to the funeral for these brave men after the Hunley was found.

I have never truly known about submarines, other than that they exist. Thank you for this fine instruction. I always look forward to your postings. Be a blessing.

Just watched a documentary on CSS Virginia & USS Monitor so this was well timed. Thanks Colin 😊

It is extremely hard for me to appreciate the determination and courage needed to enter a vessel that has already killed 2 crews.
I wonder if this detail was hidden from the volunteers?
Edit:
My grandfather served in the British submarine service from 1919 to 1929, in the beginning they were steam powered, and being a tiny guy he was the stoker who lit the boiler.

Of late, I've been looking into historian Shelby Foote and gleaning some unique views on civil war history from him. Apparently, there are many angry redditors who are pretty sure he was nothing more than the ghost of Jefferson Davis himself, but it seems that those serious historian disparaged him in such a way. He might be an interesting figure to do a video on at some point. Thank you for this video, as always, it was well worth the watch.

Thank you for covering the events, and these sailor's lives, with the respect they so deeply deserve.

I can not imagine going inside that floating metal box, practically an underwater coffin. These men must be a true heroes of their time.
