I joined the bowling team me senior year just for fun. It started as a joke with some of my friends, all of us were on the soccer team, but it started to turn serious after we had all gone to the open practice sessions. Eventually it was 5 of us soccer players joining a bowling team and only one person had previously bowled somewhat competitively. The rest of us, no idea what we were doing but we had so much fun. Two years later and with what started as a joke turned into our bowling team going from very average with only 2-3 good players, to being invited to tournaments, the team making regional tournaments instead of just the 1-2 players who would normally make it for individual tournaments, and now being the team to beat.
Having us 5 soccer players join the team changed the whole culture. The coaches always said it was so serious and there was a lack of team chemistry. Us 5 goons were just there to have fun. We all sucked at the beginning, so it was so easy to hype each other up when we started doing better and when our other teammates continued to do well. We celebrated every strike, spare, hard to get split, 10 pin, and personal bests even if it was only a 130. Even though the 3 original seniors are long gone, I’m glad we influenced more people to join the team because it was some of the most fun I had playing a high school sport. You don’t have to be good to have fun, but it’s so easy to improve and make it a lifelong hobby.
