When you give them raw files, they can see all the mistakes that you would normally correct before it got in their hands especially if they are in-experience handling raw files. Makes you look bad, especially if they publish un-corrected and they publicly point at you.

Absolutely agree. Besides which, if you are hiring a professional to record something, why not hire that same professional to edit them? Never got that.

I would respond with "if you can tell me what a raw file is and how you would use it. I will give it for a fee."

I had a client ask for raw files. They said they had an editor. The edit was poor and they attached my name as editor and cinematographer. Thankfully people in the area knew me and my work so it didn’t hurt too much but still. It could have been a real mess. Thanks for the tip. Never knew how to approach this before.

Great tip on video raw files!
On photo I never deliver raw files, it’s my touch to it and vision.

Thanks for this advice. I've been trying to figure out how to send them RAW files but this is great advice.

I've had some trouble lately getting clients for wedding film so I actually give the raw files away to make the deal more interesting for clients

i tend to give raw files if they pay for them and at that its jpeg, because if any disputes later on they can say they took them if they have the RAW content

Great advice! Always charge premium for the raw files. Photo and video! Here in New York, raw files average at $1, 200 for photography.

great video and tips thank you.

I would like to ask (maybe you already done a video on it) about how to choose a 2nd minor camera. like the 2nd angle to a interview shot. Here's an example like using the fuji H1 as the main carrying run and gun camera, but the 2nd minor camera is the XT3 or XT30 that's cheaper. or would it be best to just have 2 of the same model most of the time?

I have given raw photos to a friend from a family photoshoot with no additional fees or problems. Other than that never had anyone request it. She was a fellow photographer so i knew she had capability to work with them.

Another down side to providing the RAW files is that people or other professionals can get in your kitchen and explain to the client how they would have done it differently (better). You open yourself up to a lot of arm chair quarterbacking. As Ty said though, it's no problem if that was the original agreement.

I usually charge whatever I charged on the initial invoice minus Pre-production & Post-Production.

Gosh !! I hope you make a one day Black Friday sale for your products!! I’m doing some brakedancing moves right now just thinking about it!

I'm a photographer, I haven't entered the commercial space, yet, but I still get asked for my raw files. I make it prohibitively expensive to get unedited raw files because it's essentially giving away copyright.

I agree. I'll do it for a price but never for free.

When I hear about if the cllient asks and wants the RAW files, it doesn't make any sense! What's the point of deliver all the footage for what purpose if the client doesn't know anything or barely about filmmaking/videography?

Often times they (clients) think that they are entitled to RAW files. As if it part of the package. They always ask afterwards. You release you best footage or images and they want to see the rest. I let them know that RAW files are going to cost them an extra $2000 per day. I offer it as an add on option in the proposal. I gave RAW files away once when I first started. Never again.
