How Cheap the Cleanup of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch Truly Is

Yesterday, The Ocean Cleanup vessels returned to San Francisco with tons of trash onboard and exciting news on what it will concretely take to clean up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

The real-world performance of System 03 during the past 12 months has demonstrated that the Great Pacific Garbage Patch can be cleaned in 10 years’ time at a cost of 7.5 billion dollars.

In the meantime, to accelerate the cleanup, we are developing methods to use GPS trackers and directly measure plastic concentrations with drones: hotspot hunting.

We now have the technology to clean up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch; the only thing standing between the world and clean oceans is money. So we call upon the world—the governments, the companies, and the individuals—to make this cleanup happen.

And follow The Ocean Cleanup on:

I vote for a mandatory funding by all plastics producers; so far the industry conveniently managed to make it the consumers problem (when it ends up in the ocean, you haven't recycled enough ...) but the industry now only reaps all the benefits from production & sales without the burden of environmental consequences; let's change that

this crowd is dead, this young man figured out how to clean our oceans up, he should be getting a standing ovation the whole time... it is incredible what he is doing and I have little to no money, but some goes to Ocean Cleanup . I can't wait until they upload their video's which are incredibly uplifting and hopeful about the future, something is going right and he is doing it . Bravo to the ingenuity and bold belief in his job and project Boyan your my hero for the century. As a surfer I am so grateful for a clean ocean, I surf in Venice Beach California and the beach looks pristine practically. thanks to you ....

7.5 Billion dollars to clean up Pacific Garbage Patch.. Not a bad number. It can be solved. Great job TOC.

Less than 1% of net profit of plastic producers to help solve a global problem? That's an alarming perspective. Totally agree that one day at a time with lessons learned continually expediting the process is fundamentally the reason the Ocean Cleanup has been successful to date. Yes, this effort is a force because you lead with optimism. Thank you! ❤

This is absolutely amazing! In 6 years you and your team have calculated every angle, every nuance, every perception of what it will take, financially, environmentally even socially to calculate the cost to eradicate one of the worst environmental problems or our time. Something you were able to date to the 1960's. You're giving HOPE for everyone's future. It is a very small price to pay with a huge impact and something to work toward and achieve in my lifetime. I'm over the moon thrilled and excited!💗

Finally someone doing the most obvious thing in the most obvious way. This should have started 50 years ago. Big oil should support this effort.

I have been following the ocean cleanup for years. I am so hopeful and grateful when I see news from them. I hope to still be alive when the project is finished and I am wondering what problem they are going to tackle next. Thank you so much!

I donated in your first ever crowdfunding campaign after being so inspired by Boyans TED Talk and I've been a follower and fan of your work ever since. It gives me so much hope to see that there is a group of people worldwide supporting an idea that helps with a global problem. Something that states fail to do over and over again. So big appluase to you and everyone who has been involved with the project over the many years since that first TED Talk and also thanks to anyone who helps fund this great cause! Needles to say I'll proudly donate again to it and hope many people will follow!

Inspiring! You guys are doing great work. The call should be on the Coca-cola company to fork over over a large chunk of this investment. Along with Exxon, DuPont, Dow, etc. The ocean cleanup is picking up the problem that they created and are continuing to create.

Glad about the two-pronged approach, Interceptors to stop plastic from rivers going into the ocean, and cleaning up the several gyres like the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. After that one is dealt with, on to the others. Thank you for all you are doing, and for all the research you are doing that benefits everyone trying to help our oceans.

‏‪18:24‬‏ "For humanity to thrive we need to be optimistic about the future (...) and I think once we have cleard up the great pasific garbage patch it just gonna be the most inspiring thing, it going to be this thing you can point to not of how much we messed things up, but rather as an example that we humans CAN solve the big problems of our time..."👏
