One of my friends watched "A River Runs Through It" and thought that fly fishing was a difficult, complex sport. I took him to a creek, showed him a basic cast, and he was catching trout within 15 minutes. Trout have brains the size of an almond, catching them is not as difficult as people make it out to be. All that matters is getting the fly to the fish, and making it look like something they want to eat. Great video, and thanks for showing people that fly fishing isn't some mystical sport, it's just another way to catch fish.

Damm, brings back some good memories, I was a ranch hand on Tom Brokaw's ranch in Mcloud Montana (West boulder ranch) and Lefty came out there to fish on the ranch, it's who I learned to fly fish from, well him and Tom. Great series! Very details and represents my favorite part about fly fishing. Thanks for spreading this knowledge.

Brian, A big Thanks! for putting all of this complex PhD stuff into something I can understand and do. I'm revisiting fly fishing after 30 some odd years. Before, I was the same. Figured I needed at least a masters in biology or something, but between your series here and Oz's fish vision, it's starting to make sense! Again, thank you for this beginning series! /Dave

A lot of information in the first 4 episodes. Finally in this one, "it's easy" -- I love how you demo'd with a stick, a rope, and a carpet. Looking forward to the rest and my first fly fishing attempt next weekend.

Fly fishing is supposed to be fun not an intricate occupation; although technique and presentation are important the priority is to always enjoy the peace and fun associate with the experience. I love your videos by the way. Great work!!

Preach it Lefty! I'm a noob at fly fishing so this is good stuff to hear. I took a two and half hour beginner class the other day and was casting no problem within minutes. You watch videos where they are shilling product like $1000 dollar rods that put it where you want it and that's what the videos are for. Men like the shiny. Show us the shiny and we'll put down the cash on it. My buddy sold me two rods the other day for $150. 8 1/2 foot 5/6 Pflueger and a 9' 5wt Redington. Went to the pro shop and put new line systems on the reels. I'm sure these rods will get me where I want to be for now. I'm in Central Oregon so maybe a 9' 7wt for Kokanee or Steelhead will be in my future.

Great Series! 👍
I'm a 59 yr old newbie, everybody has been telling me for years how difficult fly fishing is, however watching this series has shown me the error in that way of thinking.
One quick question:
What is that little rod in this video that your using???

Love your videos and thanks for sharing.I have a question for you Brian. I bought a couple of fly rods at a yard sale but was wondering if there is a way to know what weight they are as there is nothing marked on the rod.
