Hi, I am Dr. Julie Brown, your concussion doctor, your Diplomate in chiropractic neurology and Fellow in traumatic brain injury and rehabilitation.
I posted a video about concussion and what it is. This video I want to go a little further into how people are evaluating it. But what we do here for therapy and rehabilitation, what the research is showing. So first off, I wanted to clarify that many in athletics now, they're requiring these baseline tests, so we get a baseline function of your brain, and then what they do is they say, oh, this kid had a concussion, let's re-evaluate it, and see if there's a change in these tests. A lot of them are subjective. I am more biased to the objective measurements of eye movement and balance and a full neurological exam, versus thinking, and doing math problems, but they can go together and they can have a concussion and be good at math still, but not pass the eye movements.
So that's how we evaluate it and I just want to clarify that. What we do here is we are able to localize what we can the level of the lesion is. So we know the pathways that are used for specific eye movements, for specific balance, the way you fall or don't fall, your reflexes that you should have, your blood pressure, your autonomics, your pupillary reflections, or opening/closing.
So we look at all of these things and really try to localize where the problem is and then we stimulate it. So we, meaning chiropractic neurologists, we really understand it, we stimulate whether it be with a smell, sound, certain light stimulation, combining those two, doing things on a tilt table at a different angle, to give different graviceptives, so gravity responses to the brain. It's very detailed, we really want to understand it, and you're probably thinking, well, she's a chiropractor, what does she know? Why does she know this, she only pops spines. Drives me nuts when people say that.
But what we need to know is that the brain controls the spine, it stabilizes it. So when we adjust someone, we need to know what the neurological consequence, and consequence is not a bad word, it can be a good thing or a bad thing, but something is happening, and we need to understand what that is doing. As chiropractic neurologist with my credentials, I have gone deep into studying that.
