Some people think that government should subsidize healthy food options, while others think it should be tax unhealthy food instead. What are your opinions.

Health issues arising from food consumption have been a measure concern in the country. While people prefer the taxation of unhealthy foods others think that healthy food should rather be subsidized. In my opinion, I firmly believe that a combination of the two is attainable and more productive for society.

Firstly, unhealthy food has remained one of the major reasons for obesity and hundreds of other health issues in the UK. This is clearly seen in the article on countless reports and articles on obesity in the UK. Most people prefer purchasing fast foods which are packed with unhealthy choices resulting in high cholesterol and diabetes. One of the reasons, unhealthy meals are preferred is due to their affordability and ease of preparation. To effectively curb the urge for fast food in the country, a tax increase which would result in financial constraints on both the owners and consumers of these meals.
Nevertheless, while the price of unhealthy food is increased through taxation, the healthy ones should be subsidized. Most people eat unhealthy food because of its affordability to an average person. Subsidization of healthy meals like fruits and vegetables will encourage people to reconsider buying their preferred healthy meals which is not only affordable but will also pave the way for a healthy lifestyle. Consequently, this approach will help the UK spend less on health care as the sector will definitely experience a significant decline in yearly medical services, most especially obesity and diabetes.

In conclusion, an increase in the cost of unhealthy through tax will instigate a possible reaction in people’s choice of meal and consumption. This approach coupled with a subsidization of healthy meals will further convince citizens to focus more on health which will ensure healthy growth and lifestyle.
