In this tutorial, I cover a quick method to export MIDI drums from a Guitar Pro file and import it into Ableton Live for use in covers or simply to borrow drums from another song to use in your own composition.

Can you do it the other way around. Export MIDI from Ableton and then import it in GP5 or Tux... a Drummer send me a MIDI from Ableton but it's not mapped right :( It just plays piano notes which are not the right tab number.

2:25 if you're organized and/or just dropping a single midi track once to specifically get a song in place, you'll always want to import the time signatures/tempo changes/all that.

Some situations where you won't want to are as follows:

-You didn't prep all of your midi tracks (if you're using others besides drums) and you're adding some in later, and you forgot to pull back to bar 1 before you started dragging the midi clip into Ableton.
-You have generalized templates rather than specific drum parts, and are adding them to a track that has different tempo data
-You have written something with a polymeter where the parts you intend to track are in one time signature, but writing the drums in their respective time signature is significantly easier than dealing with the other time signature (e.g. guitars in 4/4, drums in 7/8- writing the drums in 7/8 would probably be copy+paste+minor alterations/fills, whereas writing them in 4/4 would involve a lot of painful choppy copy+pasting- that is, unless the copy+paste function works better in newer GP releases than 5.

Hi.. I am beginner for all musical activity. Please help. Anyway, I made MIDI file from Guitar Pro and dragged MIDI file into ableton MIDi track. And I could see what that midi file was included. However, No sound. I could not hear any music sound even if that midi track was moving and seemed to similar as yours. Can you guess what problem in my procedure?

Hey Kyle! Thanks for the informative video. I'm using Ableton Live 10 (Trial) and I tried your method of importing a drum track to use it as a base for the rest of the song to make a backing track for practice. After I drop the MIDI file into Ableton on a new MIDI track, it drops all the note events but it places the notes on the upper register of the keyboard displayed in Ableton (bottom screen). If I drag the whole set of notes down to where I think the top and bottom notes fall, I get something different than what I hear in GP7. If you have the time can you share with me what I'm doing wrong or need to correct in my process? Thank you!

Just mute the tracks you don't want exported. That way you don't have to delete any tracks.
